COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -
Maryland got an ideal boost of confidence heading into its showdown with top-ranked Duke.
Jordan Williams had 12 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double, and the Terrapins used an early 22-0 run to blow past Colgate 95-40 on Tuesday night.
Next up for Maryland: An Atlantic Coast Conference test at Duke on Sunday night.
"Going to Duke with a win is definitely huge for us," Williams said. "This was a big game for us just to learn where we are as a team almost halfway through the season. To come out and beat a team by 55 is not easy to do. It was a great test for our team, and we definitely passed the test tonight."
Williams' string of double-doubles is four short of the school record, set by Len Elmore in the 1973-74 season. Williams, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward, has reached double figures in both points and rebounds in 12 of 14 games this season.
Adrian Bowie scored 16 points and freshman guard Terrell Stoglin had 12 in his first college start for the Terrapins (10-4). Cliff Tucker and Dino Gregory also scored 12 for Maryland, which shot 52 percent from the floor.
"I thought we were unselfish. We had several guys make really good extra passes. That's how you can shoot a good percentage, and we were able to do that tonight," coach Gary Williams said. "It was good for us to play that way leading into this coming week. Hopefully we can have good practices leading up to Sunday's game."
Joe Hoban scored 10 for the Raiders (1-12), who were coming off a win over Longwood. Colgate has lost to Duke, Syracuse and Maryland by a combined 164 points.
"We ran into a team tonight that was really focused," Colgate coach Emmett Davis said. "They played extremely hard. They hurt us in transition and the hurt us in every aspect of the game."
Colgate made the game's first basket _ a jumper by Pat Moore _ but started 1 for 16 from the field with two turnovers and fell hopelessly behind, 22-2.
"I think we missed some shots early, took some bad shots," Davis said. "We took too many quick shots early in the game they turned into transition opportunities for them."
Bowie scored six points in the first six minutes, and Stoglin added five points and an assist during the 22-point run.
"We were really killing them," Jordan Williams said. "That's really great for our team to start out that well, because we're going to need that Sunday in Durham. The No. 1 team in the country is not going to slack off at all."
Colgate went more than nine minutes without a point before Yaw Gyawu made a layup. That sparked a 6-0 spree, but Maryland answered with a 14-2 spurt that made it 36-10.
"I liked the effort tonight. The effort was like we've been practicing," Gary Williams said. "Obviously we had better players than Colgate did, so you're going to win that game most of the time like that."
The Raiders shot 7 for 34 before halftime, including 1 for 9 from beyond the arc. Although Colgate trailed 45-17 at the break, it wasn't as bad as their first-half performance at Syracuse, when they were outscored 46-8 in what turned out to be a 100-43 blowout.
