COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Terrell Stoglin scored 23 points and Sean Mosley added 20 to lead Maryland to an 89-84 victory over Northwood Friday evening in exhibition play.
Nick Faust (14), Ashton Pankey (12) and James Padgett (10) also reached double figures in scoring for the Terps who led by as many as 19 and never trailed in Mark Turgeon's first game as head coach.
Jonathan Dunn had a game-high 34 points for Northwood which cut a 19-point second-half deficit to 69-66 with 7:15 left.
Dunn nearly single-handedly brought the Seahawks back. The senior guard had 15 points in a span of less than 4:00, including the final 10 points in a 12-0 run that cut the lead down to three.
Stoglin answered Dunn's barrage with a hot streak of his own.
The sophomore, who has taken over at point guard with an injury to Pe'Shon Howard, had eight points in a span of 1:09 with a pair of free throws giving the Terps a 77-68 lead with 6:02 left in the game.
Northwood never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Maryland was plagued by 23 turnovers, miscues which were turned into 34 points by Northwood, the preseason No. 1 in NAIA and coached by former Villanova mentor Rollie Massimino.
However, the Terps controlled the glass (48-33 rebounding edge) and shot 51 percent from the floor which included 10 of 20 three-point attempts.
Faust heated up after a slow start. He missed his first four 3-point attempts, but warmed up at the end of the first half.
He nailed one 3-pointer with just under 1:00 left in the first half and then drained a 60-footer at the buzzer to give the Terrapins a 44-31 lead, their largest of the first 20:00.
Patrick Horstmann had a double-double (21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds) for Northwood.
Padgett led the Terps with nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Maryland opens the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 13 when UNC-Wilmington visits Comcast Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
