Storyline
Maryland closes February with a trip to #19/19 North Carolina in the lone matchup of the regular season between the teams. The Terrapins are facing back-to-back games among teams in the top three of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, having earned a 78-62 win over third-place Florida State on Wednesday.
Pending Saturday's results, the Terrapins come into Chapel Hill tied with Clemson for fifth place in the league with a 7-6 mark. Maryland is one game behind Virginia Tech for fourth in the league.
Freshman guard Terrell Stoglin was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday. He posted back-to-back 25-point games last week at Virginia Tech and at home against NC State. He led the Terrapins with 17 points Wednesday in the win over Florida State. He has raised his scoring average from 9.0 to 10.9 ppg over the last five games.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams reached 600 career rebounds with 11 against Florida State. He is the second Terrapin and seventh player in ACC history to reach that plateau as a sophomore. He currently leads the league in rebounding and could be the first Maryland player to lead the ACC on the boards since Joe Smith had 10.7 rpg in 1993-94.
Maryland has been strong at the line of late. In their last eight games, the Terps have hit .764 at the line, including an .823 effort (65-for-79) in the last three outings. Maryland went 23-of-25 against NC State.
Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina comes into Sunday's matchup with a 21-6 record overall and an 11-2 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference... The Tar Heels are in second place in the league, one game behind Duke for the top spot... UNC has clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming ACC Tournament... The Heels have a perfect 13-0 record at home this season...
UNC has moved into 19th in both national polls this week, having won its last four straight, nine of its last 10 and 15 of its last 17... The Heels' only losses in the new year are at Georgia Tech and at Duke...
Junior forward Tyler Zeller leads the Tar Heels in scoring with a 14.4 ppg average... Zeller ranks just behind Jordan Williams among league leaders in field goal percentage...
Freshman Harrison Barnes averages 13.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, and has a team-high 38 3-point field goals this season... Sophomore forward John Henson is the third UNC player averaging in double figures at 11.1 ppg... he also leads the team in rebounding at 9.3 and his 83 blocked shots rank 10th in the nation individually...
Sophomore guard Dexter Strickland is the fourth Tar Heel who has started all 27 games, averaging 7.9 points per game.
Outstanding Freshman Turned Sophomore
Sophomore forward Jordan Williams will draw a great deal of attention from fans, media and opponents this season after bursting to national attention with back-to-back double-doubles in the NCAA Tournament as a freshman:
This week, Williams was mentioned by ESPN analyst Jay Bilas as one of the "most respected" players in the nation. Bilas named 19 players nationally and only three from the ACC.
Williams was one of eight sophomores, as well as eight players from the ACC, listed on the preseason top 50 for the Wooden Award... Recently, Williams was included in the Wooden Award's midseason top 30, as well as the Naismith mid-season list... Athlon's preseason magazine listed Williams fourth on its list of post players nationally and as an honorable mention preseason All-American.
With 11 rebounds on Wednesday against Florida State, Williams hit the 600 plateau for his career... He is the 28th Terrapin to hit that mark, but only the second to do it as a sophomore... Joe Smith finished his sophomore season with 683... Williams is currently third on the sophomore single-season rebounding list with 322 (Joe Smith 362 in 1995; Len Elmore 351 in 1972), while his current 11.5 rpg average would be the best by a Terp sophomore (Elmore, 11.0 rpg, 1972).
Williams has scored at least 20 points per game in four of the last eight outings (17.8 ppg, 10.9 rpg) in that stretch... He is hitting .576 from the field and .733 at the line in the last seven games.
