COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Virginia Tech reeled off six hits and took advantage of four walks and a hit batsman in an eight-run fourth inning, while pitchers Joe Parsons and Manny Martir held Maryland to one run through eight innings, and the Hokies went on to beat the Terrapins 13-5 on Sunday afternoon.
Seven different Hokies drove in at least one run, with second baseman Michael Seaborn and catcher Chad Morgan chipping in three apiece. In the second inning, Morgan ripped a two-run double to deep center field that gave Virginia Tech (23-19, 7-14) a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
After Maryland (17-25, 4-16) had at least one hit in every inning on Saturday, they began Sunday with a hit in each of the first three innings, including leadoff singles by Charlie White and Tim Kiene in the first and second. That didn't translate into runs, however, as the Terps left a man on in the first and third, while a double play wiped out Kiene in the second.
The Hokies brought 14 batters to the plate in the eight-run fourth inning, as Maryland needed four different pitchers to get out of the frame.
Parsons (5-2) gave up a run on six hits, walked one and struck out four to earn the win. Maryland starter Chuck Ghysels (1-4) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in three-plus innings.
Freshman catcher Alex Ramsay's single up the middle in the sixth scored freshman outfielder Austin Kilbourne, who had also singled earlier in the inning, to give the Terps their first run.
Maryland was able to score four in the ninth, with sophomores Jack Cleary and Gary Schneider, along with freshman Michael Montville contributing hits.
But by that point the Hokies had put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the ninth.
Maryland continues its homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m., when Saint Joseph's comes to town.
