After getting pushed back from a scheduled Friday start with arm soreness, Brett Harman turned in a gutty performance for Maryland but was outdueled by NC State's Carlos Rodon, who led the 17th-ranked Wolfpack to a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
Harman went 6 2/3 for Maryland (20-13, 4-10 ACC), scattering seven hits while allowing three runs. He held the Wolfpack (21-8, 9-5 ACC) scoreless over his final 3 2/3, but Rodon shut out the Terps over the last eight.
Trea Turner went 4-for-4 with two runs to lead NC State's offense, while Maryland's Tomo Delp was the only other player to have multiple hits with a 2-for-3 effort.
For a game that was expected to - and turned out to be a pitcher's duel, the first inning was an aberration.
Turner led off with a double, and then advanced to third and scored on two groundouts for a 1-0 Wolfpack lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Maryland perfectly executed a hit-and-run to knot it up at 1-1. After a pair of walks and with the runners moving, Tomo Delp dropped a 1-2 pitch into shallow right-center field to score Jordan Hagel from second. Tim Kiene followed with a single that NC State center fielder Jake Fincher mishandled, allowing K.J. Hockaday to score.
After that, Rodon, the ACC's leader in ERA, buckled down. The freshman left-hander stranded Maryland runners on second and third in the first and surrendered just three hits the rest of the way.
NC State's offense, meanwhile, scored the game's final runs in the third inning when Danny Canela drove in two with a single up the middle to make it 3-2.
Maryland put a runner in scoring position in the sixth and had pinch-runner Andrew Amaro 90 feet away from tying it in the seventh, but couldn't get a run across.
Relief pitcher Charlie Haslup kept the Terps close by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings, including a seventh inning in which he didn't throw a pitch. The junior replaced Harman with runners on the corners and two outs and used a quick pickoff move to get the runner at first and end the threat.
Rodon, though, set down the side in the eighth and after a walk in the ninth induced a 5-4-3 double play to end it.
Harman (4-2), who struck out two and walked two, took the loss. Rodon struck out eight and walked three to improve to 5-0.
The teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Maryland RHP David Carroll (3-1, 3.53) will face NC State RHP Logan Jernigan (3-1, 4.44).
