Now in his 13th season on Gary Williams' coaching staff, Jimmy Patsos has been on the sidelines for nearly every season of Williams' career at Maryland. One of the Terps' three scouting and recruiting coaches, Patsos helped guide the Terps in 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances – which have included the 2002 NCAA championship, two trips to the Final Four and seven Sweet Sixteen appearances. During his tenure with the Terrapins, Maryland has finished in the top half of the Atlantic Coast Conference 10 times, won two ACC regular season championships (1994-95 and 2001-02) and posted a school-record seven-straight 20-win seasons. In addition, four players (Walt Williams in 1992, Joe Smith in 1995, Steve Francis in 1999 and Chris Wilcox in 2002) have been lottery selections in the NBA Draft.
During his career at Maryland, Patsos has coached 13 NBA Draft choices including first round selections Williams, Smith, Keith Booth (1997), Francis, Wilcox and Juan Dixon (2002). He has been a key component of Maryland's success and its current legacy of continuity.
One of the top assistants in the nation, Patsos has been a model of consistency and longevity for the Maryland program. After helping guide the Terps to the 2002 NCAA title, Patsos was lauded in a preseason annual for his loyalty and longtime service. He was recognized by ESPN's Andy Katz as a “Coach on the Rise” after helping the Terps to seventh Sweet Sixteen appearance, a fifth Top 10 ranking in the final coaches poll and a victory over No. 1 Duke in the inaugural season at Comcast Center in 2003.
Coach And Mentor
The 2001-02 season saw the focus of Patsos' coaching duties shift from supervision of the Terps' academic affairs to student-athlete recruiting and opponent scouting. Patsos played a key role in the advance scouting of opponents from the season's opening tip to the Terps' NCAA title game in Atlanta, and continued his duties in 2002-03. As a recruiter, the coach helped Maryland to land a 2002 class ranked as high as fourth in the nation, and a group of newcomers for 2003-04 rated as high as second in the country. The class of 2007 includes several top 100 recruits, including McDonald's All-American and No. 2 shooting guard prospect Mike Jones, No. 9 power forward Ekene Ibekwe and No. 10 center Hassan Fofana.
Patsos joined the Terrapins as a volunteer assistant during the 1991-92 season and immediately became an integral part of Williams' staff. His numerous responsibilities have centered on opponent scouting, on-court coaching and the academic development of Maryland's players. His role as an academic mentor during his first 10 seasons on Williams' staff proved prosperous, as the teams' overall academic performance improved under his guidance.
Prior to his appointment at Maryland, Patsos was the assistant coach at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. He helped Carroll to a 21-8 record and a national ranking of No. 6 during his first season before the team lost to the famed DeMatha Catholic High School in the city playoffs. Patsos was involved in the maturation of Charles Harrison (Wake Forest) and Lawrence Moten (Syracuse), both of whom became stars on the collegiate level.
Each summer Patsos assists in the direction of the Gary Williams basketball camp, coordinating counselor management, facility and participant scheduling, housing, meals and guest speakers. Attendance over the past four summers was the largest in camp history. In addition to his work with the Gary Williams camp, he is a frequent speaker at camps throughout Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania during the summer months, and he coordinates the public speaking engagements of the Terps' players.
From Catholic To College Park
Patsos was a three-year varsity letterwinner at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. During his career, the Cardinals posted a record of 51-26. Patsos played for the late Jack Bruen, who later led Colgate University to a pair of NCAA Division I Tournament appearances.
Catholic won four regular-season tournament championships during Patsos' career, including the 1989 Manhattanville Tournament. Patsos scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the championship game to lead the Cardinals to a 106-99 victory over Manhattanville. Other top games during his senior season included 12 points and five rebounds vs. Frostburg State, 10 rebounds at Scranton and 12 points and nine rebounds against St. Mary's (Md.).
As a junior, Patsos recorded season highs of 14 points against Upsala and 11 rebounds against Washington College. He scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Catholic to the championship of the Alfred University Charity Cage Classic with a 90-88 victory over the host Saxons. The Cardinals were 18-8 during both his junior and senior years, then a school record for victories in a single season.
Patsos' teammate during the 1987 and 1988 seasons was current Catholic head coach Mike Lonergan, who has led the Cardinals to the Sweet Sixteen of the past four NCAA Division III tournaments, including a national title in 2001.
A native of Boston, Mass., who grew up attending games at the Boston Garden, Patsos earned his bachelor's degree in history from Catholic in 1989. A brother, Chris, captained the Florida Southern baseball team to the 1981 NCAA Division II World Series championship.
