Terps Get Defensive in 66-50 Win Over Fordham

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Freshman Jared Nickens had his first game in double figures with 13 points and Maryland won its third straight matchup to open the season with a 66-50 victory over Fordham on Thursday night.

Jake Layman added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Terrapins (3-0).

The Terps held the Rams to just 19 of 62 (30.6 percent) from the field.

“I thought we were terrific defensively tonight,” head coach Mark Turgeon. “We executed at a much higher level in the second half and were also able to make our free throws.

Maryland led 23-18 at halftime and opened the second half on a 16-6 run behind a pair of spectacular Layman dunks.

The Terps for the remainder of the contest and a jumper by Nickens provided a 15-point margin with 11:39 left.

Senior Richaud Pack, who recorded nine points and eight rebounds and had just one turnover on the night, increased the lead to 53-34 with layup with 4:18 remaining and the Terps had no trouble closing out the game.

The Terps are off to a 3-0 start for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Maryland will next face Arizona State in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City at 7 p.m. on Monday.
