
Maryland Drops Two Duals in New York

NEW YORK – The Maryland wrestling team dropped duals to Hofstra and Duke at the Grapple at the Garden Sunday afternoon.
Competing for the third straight season at Madison Square Garden, the Terps (4-7, 0-3 Big Ten) held early leads in both duals before losing late. No. 7 Geoffrey Alexander was a standout for Maryland, winning twice at 133 pounds.
In their first competition of the day, the Terps fell to Hofstra 29-12.
After Josh Polacek won by forfeit at 125 pounds, Alexander defeated Kyle Krasavage 7-3 to give Maryland an early 9-0 lead.
The Pride ripped off six straight wins to take control of the dual. No. 17 Jamel Hudson took out No. 11 Shyheim Brown 8-3 in a bout between ranked competitors at 141 pounds. No. 17 Cody Ruggirello and Jahlani Callender picked up consecutive falls at 149 and 157 to give Hostra a 15-9 lead.
Nick Terdick continued the Hofstra run with decision over TJ Guidice at 165. Josh Snook and Tony Gardner were then edged by decision at 174 and 184 pounds to make the team score 24-9.
At 197 pounds, Rob Fitzgerald picked up a 7-1 win before Ryan Kail lost by technical fall at heavyweight.
The Terps faced former ACC rival Duke in their second dual of the day and fell 24-9.
The dual started at 125 pounds with Polacek falling 5-0 to Thayer Atkins. Alexander tied the team score with a solid 9-2 victory over Bailey Jack.
Goodwin extended the Maryland lead to 6-3, using a late takedown to defeat Brandon Gambucci, 4-2. Brown, in his first bout of the season at 149 pounds, got past Tanner Hough, 6-0.
Duke won the final six matches of the dual to secure a 24-9 win.
Maryland returns to action at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., from Dec. 29-30.
