Day One Recap
EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister (149) took eighth in the 149-pound bracket as Maryland wrapped up competition at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Friday afternoon. Bannister wrestled a pair of close matches in the third session, but ultimately settled for eighth in the 149-pound bracket.
A medical forfeit advanced Bannister into the seventh round of consolation where he met Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. A takedown in the first period proved to be the difference, as Deakin fended off Bannister's attacks to seal a 3-2 decision victory.
The La Plata, Md. native wrestled another close one in the seventh place bout in a rematch with Anthony Giraldo (Rutgers) from Thursday's round of 16. Another first period takedown had Bannister wrestling from behind, but he managed a pair of escapes to tie it at the start of the third. Bannister fought until the end looking to score, but Giraldo ultimately secured the one point decision, 4-3.
Redshirt senior Billy Rappo had the 10th ranked 133-pounder in the country on the ropes early, scoring a take down and back points on Iowa State's Earl Hall at the end of the first period. Rappo then got out for an escape in the 2nd period to take a 5-0 lead, but a pair of takedowns got Hall back in it.
Rappo had a hold of Hall for much of the third period to take control of riding time, but the Cyclone grappler finally broke loose to make it 6-5 in the closing seconds. There Hall managed to throw Rappo to the mat for a takedown and near fall points to tally the win.
Redshirt freshman Josh Ugalde (165) finished his first career Midlands 3-1 after medically forfeiting his consolation round six match. Maryland finished with 36 team points.
Maryland will return to dual match competition on January 8 for a pair of matches vs. Illinois and Navy (Beauty and the Beast) at XFINITY Center. The Terps will also have entries at the Franklin & Marshall Open on January 7.
