TOWSON, Md. – The Maryland baseball team saw seven players participate in the Cal Ripken League Championship Series this weekend. The Bethesda Big Train took the titles with a 2-0 series win over the Baltimore Redbirds.
Junior Justin Morris, sophomore John Murphy and sophomore Peyton Sorrels were members of the champion Big Train. Morris had five hits and three runs scored during the playoffs and finished the summer with a .287 average, with 10 doubles, four triples and a home run. The Maryland native also added 22 runs scored and 25 RBI.
Murphy took the bump for game one of the league championship series and tossed two and a third of an inning. The sophomore ended the summer season with a record of 4-2 and a 4.71 ERA.
The runner-up Redbirds contained five Terrapins. Sophomore Hunter Parsons made two appearances in the LCS and finished off an outstanding summer with a perfect 6-0 record along with a 2.03 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 44.1 IP.
Senior Mike Rescigno was a member of the Redbirds' stellar bullpen. The Monmouth Beach, N.J., native completed his summer campaign with a miniscule 0.93 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 19.1 IP. Sophomore reliever Andrew Miller had similar success in the pen, wrapping up his summer for the Redbirds with a 2.27 ERA and 39 strikeouts to just three walks in 35.2 IP.
Incoming freshman Tyler Blohm saw success in a variety of roles for the Redbirds and recorded a 2.93 ERA over 28 and two thirds summer innings. He also struck out 27. Sophomore Marty Costes finished his summer with a .299 average with seven home runs and 25 RBI. He also notched seven doubles.
Summer Diamond Notes
- In the Cape Cod League, sophomore Nick Dunn is sporting a .327 average with a team leading 24 RBI for the Brewster Whitecaps… Junior Kevin Smith has had similar success with Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The shortstop has put up solid offensive numbers with a .296 average with 11 doubles and two home runs while also impressing with sensational defense… Redshirt junior Ryan Selmer has been solid in a relief role with Wareham, notching a 3.17 ERA in 22.2 IP.
- Maryland had numerous players compete in the Cal Ripken League this summer.
- Four Terps suited up for the Silver Spring-Tacoma T-Bolts. Redshirt senior Jared Price tossed 12.2 IP and notched a 3.55 ERA with 12 strikeouts and four saves… Senior Nick Cieri batted .294 with five home runs and 24 RBI… Senior Tayler Stiles made one appearances, and tossed five innings a picked up a win… Incoming freshman Ty Friedrich batted .351 in 13 games.
- Redshirt sophomore Tyler Brandon notched a 1.97 ERA in 13.2 IP for the Baltimore Dodgers.
- Maryland had four players on the Gaithersburg Giants… Incoming freshman Nick Pantos recorded a 4.91 ERA in 29.1 IP… Redshirt freshman Truman Thomas tossed 35 innings and notched a 3-2 record… Incoming freshman Elliot Zoellner tossed 23.2 IP with a 4.94 ERA… Senior Pat Hisle notched 16 RBI and 13 runs scored with two home runs and five doubles.
- Junior Zach Jancarski has had a very productive summer for the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball, batting .288 with 20 stolen bases… Junior Jamal Wade has been a two-way standout for the Keene Swamp Bats, batting .278 with two home runs and 11 RBI at the plate with a 1.58 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 11.1 IP on the mound.
- Sophomore Cameron Enck has been sensational for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game League. Dan Maynard is batting .185 in 35 games with the club.
- Sophomore AJ Lee is batting .244 for the Matsu Miners of the Alaskan Baseball League, while senior Madison Nickens has appeared in 18 games.
