COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland travels to Nebraska for its second Big Ten road trip of the season this weekend. Coverage of all three games can be heard on the Maryland Baseball Network or watched on BTN2Go. Games one and three will be on BTN Plus ($) while game two will be broadcast nationally on BTN.
LEADING IT OFF
• Maryland has won 18 of its last 21 games after starting the season 1-5. Of Maryland's eight losses, six have come against teams ranked in the top 50 in RPI.
• Maryland is sixth in the country in stolen bases (58), swiping 2.15 bases per game. Maryland has already doubled its stolen base total from last year, when the Terps had 28 in 57 games.
• Friday night ace junior RHP Brian Shaffer leads the Big Ten with a 1.70 ERA and is second in the conference with 52 strikeouts. Shaffer was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after his start against Princeton.
• The Terps are ranked second in the conference in walks with 144, trailing only Michigan (155). Brandon Gum leads the Big Ten in walks with 18 in just 22 games played. Gum also leads the conference in on-base percentage with a .494 mark.
• The Terps have seven players with 14 or more walks this season—Gum, Madison Nickens (17), Zach Jancarski (16), Will Watson (16), Nick Dunn (15), Nick Cieri (15) and Marty Costes (14).
• Two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week Tyler Blohm has the second most wins in the Big Ten (5) and the best hits allowed per nine innings (5.56).
• Marty Costes leads the Terps with a .358 average and is third in the Big Ten in hits with 39. Costes is currently riding an 18-game reached base streak and 12-game hitting streak, both season bests for Maryland.
• Patrick Hisle has filled in admirably for Kevin Smith at shortstop. Hisle notched the first hit of his season, and RBi double, against Rutgers on Sunday. He then scored the inning run in Maryland's 12-11 victory over Richmond on Tuesday.
• The 2017 season is head coach John Szefc's fifth season in College Park. Szefc has led the Terps to four straight 30-win seasons and two NCAA Super Regional appearances, both program firsts. He became the fastest coach in Maryland history to win 150 games when the Terps topped Bryant in game one of a doubleheader on 3/12.
• The Terps topped the Big Ten preseason coaches poll while D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Baseball America named Maryland the Big Ten favorites for the 2017 season. It is the third straight year D1Baseball has tabbed the Terps its Big Ten preseason frontrunner.
