RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman right hander Mark DiLuia tossed four scoreless innings and struck out seven as the Maryland baseball team pushed past VCU, 2-0, at The Diamond Wednesday afternoon.
The Terrapins (4-4) were propelled by a dominant team pitching performance, in which Maryland pitching scattered five hits and struck out 14 to just two walks. Single runs in the fourth and fifth were enough for the Terps to overcome the Rams (3-6).
DiLuia was spectacular throughout his first career start, at one point retiring seven straight batters. The Illinois native worked out of jams in the first and fourth. The Terps grabbed their first run in the top half of the fourth when Justin Morris laid down a squeeze bunt to plate AJ Lee.
The Terps manufactured their second run after Marty Costes reached in the fifth. Zack Jancarski bunted Costes over before the junior stole third. Nick Dunn brought home the Baltimore native with a sac fly.
That is all the Maryland pitching staff would need. Sophomore Elliot Zoellner tossed two scoreless innings of relief before freshman Sean Fisher notched a zero in the seventh. Senior Kevin Biondic threw a clean eighth inning before junior John Murphy struck out the side in the ninth to notch his second save.
Maryland returns to action this weekend for the Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament at Coastal Carolina. The Terps begin play against Radford Friday morning at 11 a.m. and fans can listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
