Terrapins Celebrate Alumnae Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland field hockey team welcomed back former players from all over the world this weekend as part of the Terps' Alumnae Weekend. Terrapins traveled from Europe and many states.

The 1999 NCAA Championship team gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their title. They were recognized at the Maryland football game Saturday. The 1999 Terps brought their families to College Park to share in the celebration.

"It's been incredibly meaning full to not just be here, but to be here surrounded by my teammates," Autumn Welsh Kelly, a member of the 1999 team said. "There's so many of us that came back. We had an awesome run in '99. I think the coolest part of our team is we just stayed close since then."

The current Terrapins team took on them alumnae team Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The current squad won, 6-1, with associate head coach Katie Bam scoring the alums' goal.

"It's amazing to be back," alum Lein Holsboer said. "It's so meaningful to be with everyone here together. Missy coached so many amazing players and to have that Terp family here is really awesome."

"The whole weekend has been great, but what's been most impressive is how they all came," head coach Missy Meharg said. "I mean. they were out here 40 minutes prior, they had a serious warmup. I was actually just so pleased that they took this game to heart. For them, it's an honor to be around the women when they were here how many years ago. They were getting ready to play in postseason. We happened to have a bye this weekend in the Big Ten format, so we couldn't have found a better team or better simulation than the Maryland alums."

After the game, the alumnae, their families and the current team and families enjoyed a tailgate together. Members of the 1999 team presented a donation to the program.

Maryland clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend. The Terrapins will take on Michigan or Penn State Friday at 4 p.m. in State College, Pa. The Terps' game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
