WASHINGTON – The University of Maryland wrestling team came away with many impressive individual performances at the American University Round Robin, securing three first-place finishes and five second-place finishes against hosts American and visiting VMI.

Maryland compiled the second-most wins of the day, tallying 32 in total. The Terps led the round robin in pins (9), had the second-most tech. falls (5), and finished with the most total match points (294). Jaron Smith made his return to the mat after missing most of last season due to injury, earning wins in his opening two matches, while Brandon Cray, Quinn Devaney, and Garrett Burnham all made their season debuts.

King Sandoval (133), Kyle Cochran (165), and Philip Spadafora (174) all turned in dominant performances on their way to first place finishes in their weight classes.

Sandoval pinned American's Daniel Kidd in 4:32 in his opening bout, then pinned VMI's Sean McKinney in 0:56 before winning 17-0 by tech fall over VMI's Cliff Conway to wrap up his undefeated day on his way to first place at 133.

Cochran won via back-to-back-to-back major decisions, beating American's Tim Fitzpatrick 11-0, VMI's Jon Hoover 11-2, and American's Michael Lewis 9-1.

Spadafora continued his winning ways, last week finishing second at the Southeast Open, and this week finishing first at 174 pounds. Spadafora opened his day winning 12-2 by major decision over American's Connor Bourne, beating American's Bryce Dempsey with a 5-0 dec., securing a 12-3 major dec. win over American's Conner Allshouse, and knocking off No. 19 Neal Richards of VMI with a 5-4 decision.

Maryland will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 17, traveling to West Point, N.Y. for the Black Knight Invite. For full results from the American Round Robin, see below.
