LAFAYETTE. La. – The Maryland baseball team dropped two games to Louisiana, both on walk-of errors, in a doubleheader at Russo Park Saturday.
The Rajin Cajuns won the first contest, a wild 14-inning affair that so the Terps (6-4) blow the lead in the ninth, before scoring two in the ninth to overcome Maryland 2-1 in the second game.
Maryland returns to action against Delaware at 4 p.m., Tuesday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Action can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
Game One
A topsy-turvy 14 innings game was won by Louisiana as the Rajin Cajuns walked it off in the 14th inning to win 4-3.
Maryland received a sensational start from redshirt sophomore right-hander Zach Thompson, who tossed six and two thirds innings of two-run ball and struck out five to just two walks. The only runs scored against Thompson came in the second to give Louisiana and early lead.
The Terps plated two in the sixth. Sophomore Tommy Gardiner singled before scoring on a Chris Alleyne triple off the wall. Alleyne then scored on a Caleb Walls squeeze bunt.
Freshman Benjamin Cowles gave Maryland the lead in the seventh, doubling in Taylor Wright who had led off the inning with a two-bagger.
Louisiana was able to tie the game off Maryland closer John Murphy in the ninth, but Murphy rebounded to get out of a jam to keep the game tied at 3-3. The Terps then walked the tight rope from the 10th inning to the 13th, allowing runners on but consistently getting out of jams.
In the 10th, sophomore Justin Vought threw the go-ahead run out trying to advance to steal third to end that inning. Vought then made a diving tag out on a runner coming in from third on a squeeze bunt to help end the 11th.
After Elliott Zoellner struck out the side to get Maryland through the 12th, the Terps defense once again came up big in the 13th. With two outs and two on, Alleyne made an incredible diving catch on the warning track to save the game for Maryland.
The Terps offense was unable to get much going during extras and the Cajuns made them pay in the 14th. The winning run came in with the bases loaded and one out. Cowles bobbled a groundball on the infield grass and Daniel LaHare scored to end the game.
Game Two
The Terps led for the majority of the game, but fell 2-1 after allowing a pair of runs in the ninth.
The story of the matchup for Maryland was freshman right-handed pitcher Trevor LaBonte, who threw six innings of one-hit ball while striking out six and not allowing a run. Maryland's offense plated one run in support of LaBonte when Kody Milton put down a squeeze bunt that scored Sebastian Holte-Mancera.
Maryland's bullpen put up zeros in the seventh and eighth, but in the ninth left-hander Andrew Vail walked the first batter before Louisiana did enough to score two after Sean Heine entered the ballgame.
