Maryland Falls to Ohio State, 5-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Ohio State defeated the Maryland baseball team, 5-1, to win the teams' three-game series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Sunday afternoon.

What to Know

  • Ohio State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and half innings before riding a complete game, one run outing from left-hander Griffan Smith.
  • Ridge Winand hit two home runs, a solo shot in the second and three-run shot in the third to give Ohio State the 4-0 lead.
  • Maryland responded in the bottom of the third. Benjamin Cowles led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a ground out. AJ Lee then laid down a sac bunt to plate Cowles.
  • Smith shutdown the Terps offense for the remainder of the contest. Maryland starter Trevor LaBonte was solid, working six innings, including three straight scoreless to end his day. Right-hander Mark DiLuia worked the final three innings, allowing just an unearned run in the eighth.

Other Stuff

  • AJ Lee and Justin Vought have both reached base in 15 consecutive games, tied for the team lead.
  • Lee is riding a six-game hitting streak. Maryland's senior shortstop went 8-for-14 with four RBIs for the weekend.  
  • It was Easter Sunday at the ballpark and a number of families were in attendance to support their sons. In addition, Maryland's director of operations Meghan Kane brought baseball Easter eggs filled with bubble gum. Such a good idea, Meghan. The players loved their bubble gum and Lee was the best bubble blower we observed. Would not have expected anything less from a senior captain. If you would like an egg, Meghan has 700 more.
  • There was much chirping in the press box as the number of birds in a nest above the seated media and staff has grown in size. Added to the ambiance all day long.
