Box Score PYLMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Maryland baseball team tossed a combined one-hitter, its first since 2016, in a 5-2 victory over Villanova at Villanova Ballpark Wednesday afternoon.
What to Know
- Maryland used five pitchers, with LHP Tyler Blohm, RHP Nick Turnbull and LHP Andrew doing the heavy lifting, to one-hit the Wildcats. It was the first time Villanova had been one-hit since 2016.
- Blohm was essentially spotless in his outing. He allowed just one baserunner, who came around to score in the fourth, but struck out six and did not give up a hit in three and a third innings of work. The Severna Park native, who was on a pitch count, earned the win after retiring the first nine batters he faced.
- Turnbull had perhaps his finest outing of the season, striking out five and giving up just a single hit in three and two thirds.
- Vail had to clean up a bases loaded mess in the eighth and limited the damage to just one run. He struck out four in two innings and earned his first career save.
- Maryland did most of its damage offensively in a four-run second. The Terps loaded the bases before Ben Irvine notched an RBI on a ground out to first. AJ Lee then slapped a single up the middle to plate a pair of runs. Randy Bednar followed with a single to left-center to make it 4-0.
- After Villanova cut the deficit to 4-2 after eight, Justin Vought gave the Terps some insurance with a solo homer to left-center. Vought tied the team lead with eight homers for the season.
Other Stuff
- AJ Lee has reached in 20 consecutive games, which is the longest streak for Terp this season. He ended the 2017 season on a 24-game reached base streak. Lee is also riding an 11-game hitting streak, his career-high is 14 set in 2017.
- Bednar leads Maryland in multi-hit (17) and multi-RBI (11) games.
- Villanova head basketball coach Jay Wright tossed the ceremonial first pitch. We later learned that Coach Wright's son is named Taylor Wright and that he played baseball. Our Taylor Wright's dad and cousin have the initials J. Wright. What a day on the diamond.
- Vail's first save, added with John Murphy's nine saves, means the Terps have 10 total saves for Gloucester Catholic products this season and 15 all-time. Maryland's other Gloucester Catholic pitching product Mike Shawaryn did not record a save in his career. What an underachiever.
- Hey, if Murphy is "The Sheriff", we'll call Vail, "The Deputy".
- Speaking of that Shawaryn guy, you know, the all-time Maryland leader in strikeouts, wins and innings pitched (maybe not an underachiever after all), he tossed eight innings in Maryland's last one-hitter, a 1-0 win over Rhode Island on February 26, 2016. The man who called the pitches for Shawaryn that day? None other than then Maryland hitting coach Rob Vaughn, who was filling in for former Maryland pitching coach Jimmy Belanger. Rhode Island got a knock from the second batter of the game and didn't get another. Good game calling, Coach.
