Michigan Defeats Maryland 10-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Michigan defeated the Maryland baseball team, 10-4, at Bob "Turtle" Stadium Saturday afternoon.

What to Know

  • The game was tied 1-1 through four innings before Michigan plated four runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth to take control of the game. Maryland starter Zach Thompson tossed four and two thirds innings and gave up five earned runs.
  • Michigan opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third before Randy Bednar hit his eighth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Thompson was very solid through four innings, but lost the strike zone in the fifth, hitting a batter and walking four to set up the Wolverines for a four-run inning. Michigan then struck for three more in the sixth.
  • Freshman Maxwell Costes retook the team home run lead with his ninth homer of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth. The Terps scored again on an AJ Lee groundout in the seventh.
  • Freshman Benjamin Cowles hit his third homer of the year in the ninth to make the score 10-4. Cowles ended the game a triple away from the cycle.
  • Sophomore Michael Pineiro finished the game with two hits, including a double, and a run scored.
  • Michigan starter Tommy Henry earned the win, tossing six and a third of an inning with seven strikeouts.

Other Stuff

  • AJ Lee has now reached in 22 consecutive games, which is the longest streak for Terp this season. He ended the 2017 season on a 24-game reached base streak.
  • Bednar is now slashing .356/.424/.699 in Big Ten play with 11 doubles and four home runs.
