Spadafora Wins in Terps' Loss to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Maryland wrestling team fell to Michigan, 34-3, Friday night at the Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Philip Spadafora – ranked 23rd in the country at 174 pounds – secured the lone win of the night for Maryland, taking down Max Maylor via a 5-3 decision.

The match started at 125 pounds, in which Brandon Cray and Jack Medley were locked in a tight battle through the first, but Cray would ultimately drop a 16-2 major decision.

Sandoval's strong defense kept him in a tight match with Joey Silva at 133 pounds, but Silva would come out ahead with a 3-2 decision as Sandoval couldn't come away with a takedown as time expired.

Hunter Baxter gave up a 15-2 major decision to Cole Mattin at 149 pounds, avoiding the tech. fall late in the third by not giving up another takedown, and Michael Doetsch and No. 9 Kanen Storr fought a tough battle at 149 pounds, though Storr – who recently came out of Olympic redshirt – earned a 5-3 decision over the redshirt junior.

Lucas Cordio battled No. 12 Will Lewan at 157 pounds but dropped a 19-4 tech. fall late in the third period. Kyle Cochran and Tyler Meisinger faced off in the most exciting match of the night at 165 pounds, as a coaches challenge video review overturned a Meisinger pin and Cochran battled back from a eight point deficit. Cochran would ultimately drop a 12-9 decision despite hanging tough for the entire bout.

Philip Spadafora came up with the Terps' lone win of the night, winning 5-3 over Max Maylor on a crucial third period takedown and riding time point. Kyle Jasenski battled No. 17 Jelani Embree in their third career meeting, with Embree taking the 8-3 decision.
