MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Maryland used a miraculous comeback to overcome a two-run deficit in the ninth inning, forcing extras and improving to 3-0 to start the season with a 4-2 win over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.Â
What to Know
- What a comeback! Maryland was shut out through eight innings and didn't have much going offensively whatsoever before putting up two runs in each the ninth and tenth innings. The Cougars faced the minimum from the second to the sixth innings and allowed just three hits in the first eight innings.
- Maryland started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2015, when the Terps beat Western Kentucky, Canisius, and Old Dominion at the Caravelle Resort Tournament. You might remember that the Terps also made a NCAA super regional that season...
- More Terp debuts! Sean Burke made his Maryland debut as today's starting pitcher. The redshirt freshman right-hander impressed in five innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight.
- Freshman Aaron Perez also made his debut as a Terp, getting the start at second base. Redshirt junior Tavan Shahidi saw his first action as a Terrapin, drawing a walk in a pinch hit opportunity, and freshman right-hander Connor Staine got the call out of the bullpen for the first time.
- The Terps were severely limited by C.J. Czerwinski, Charleston's starting pitcher. The freshman right-hander pitched five innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits. James Tradd was also lights-out out of the bullpen, pitching two-no hit innings.
- Maryland and College of Charleston were locked into a vintage pitcher's duel in the early innings. Not a whole lot of offense happening on either side. Freshman on-base machine Tucker Flint singled in his first at-bat, and Tommy Gardiner worked back from a 0-2 count for a leadoff single, but neither team could push anything across until the sixth inning.
- Sean Burke put two runners on without recording an out in the sixth, so Elliot Zoellner came out of the pen and gave up just one, limiting the damage but allowing the Cougars to jump to a 1-0 lead.
- While Maryland's bats remained cool, Connor Staine made his first appearance as a Terp, shutting down the Cougars in order in the seventh. Staine gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth, which gave Charleston a two-run advantage. Mark DiLuia worked out of the jam and kept it a two-run ballgame.
- The Terps finally got it going in the ninth when they needed it the most, as Chris Alleyne hit a leadoff single and Tucker flint followed it up with a double. A Bednar sac fly brought home a run to make it a one-run game, then a clutch sacrifice squeeze from Michael Pineiro in his season debut tied it up.
- DiLuia remained in for the ninth and worked a clean inning.
- Gardiner singled with one out in the 10th inning, then Shahidi walked to put on two runners with just one out. Chavis came in to pinch run, then Gardiner scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Chavis then scored on another wild pitch. Maryland had somehow clawed back from a two-run deficit and earned a two-run lead.
- Trevor LaBonte made his season debut out of the bullpen, shut down the Cougars by retiring them in order, earned the save and secured Maryland's third-straight win.
