COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team honored its five seniors and celebrated the 2019 season by taking its annual banquet virtual. The Terrapins also celebrated their Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.
The Terrapins honored the five seniors in Jen Bleakney, Lizzy Dessoye, Logan Edmondson, Kelee Lepage and Madison Maguire. In their careers, these special Terrapins have earned a record of 73-19, gone to two Final Fours and made two NCAA Championship game appearances, won three Big Ten regular season titles and the 2018 Big Ten Tournament title. They've earned numerous conference, regional, national and academic honors.
Maryland won its fifth Big Ten regular season title in six years this fall and earned a record of 17-4. The Terrapins made their 25th straight NCAA Tournament appearance – the longest active streak in the country.
Several members of the team were honored with individual awards, named after legendary players in the program.
Noelle Frost was awarded the Kate Kauffman-Beach Award, an honor that goes to a player that epitomizes the "world class" hockey player that demonstrates the technical and tactical skills coupled with the heart of a champion.
The Kateri Simon Award is the team's Unsung Hero honor. Junior Kyler Greenwalt was named the recipient as the athlete that has persevered in times of adversity and has displayed talent, courage and perseverance while serving the team as her first priority.
Junior Hannah Bond received the Carla Tagliente Award, the honor given to the student-athlete who has most consistently displayed excellence on the field and in the classroom by her commitment to preparation and execution.
Senior Madison Maguire was honored with the Keli Smith Puzo Award. She was the player who was the team's 'straight shooter'. She was named as the player that wears her emotions on her sleeve and sets her sights on achieving the high level goals she sets for herself.
Junior Brooke DeBerdine received the Dina Rizzo Award, an honor that is not given every year, but only when an athlete truly deserves it, for those that lead by example with passion and commitment to winning. This player inspires everyone through a contagious work rate, a passion for her teammates and deep-rooted love for the game of field hockey.
Presented by the University's M Club Foundation, senior Kelee Lepage was awarded the Laura LeMire Award for outstanding athletic and academic leadership by a field hockey student-athlete. Laura LeMire played field hockey at Maryland from 1977-1980 and was the first female president of the M Club. This award recognizes the contributions and examples that Laura provided to the Maryland field hockey program and athletic department.
The Terrapins honored longtime head of medical Sandy Worth after her retirement this winter. Worth served at Maryland for nearly 50 years. She was the first woman in the ACC to serve as head athletic trainer and the only woman to serve as head athletic trainer for football in the ACC.
