COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland wrestling upper weights won four matches in a row and lifted the Terps to an 18-16 win over in-state rival Navy, 18-16. After trailing 16-6 to the Midshipmen,
Dominic Solis,
Kyle Cochran,
Jaron Smith, and
Zach Schrader all won their matches by decision to lift the Terps (3-2) to their third comeback win of the season.
Down 16-15 in the team score, Schrader battled with Navy's Riley Smith as the pair went into sudden victory. Schrader was the more aggressive of the two, and the mindset paid off as the heavyweight took the Midshipmen down, winning 3-1, and sending his teammates and XFINITY Center Pavilion crowd into a frenzy for the second straight week.
Last week, on December 4, Schrader clinched victories over Drexel and Duke for the Terps. The transfer from California-Baptist has proven to be one of the Terps' most reliable and highly-ranked wrestlers.
Maryland got on the board in the third match of the day when 141-pounder
Danny Bertoni secured a 7-3 decision. 149-pounder
Michael North entered the third period tied 2-2 but using the top position, he managed to ride out his opponent for the entire frame and earn a one-point riding score to pick up the win. Solis, Cochran, and Smith followed with victories, setting up Schrader for the dramatic victory.
The quartet of Solis, Cochran, Smith, and Schradeer are now 29-9 and outscoring opponents 300-148.
This was the Terps first win against Navy since January 20, 2012, when Maryland won in Alumni Hall 23-12. The current streak marks the program's first three-match winning streak since November 2017.
