#5 Maryland Opens Season vs. Michigan

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -  The Maryland men's lacrosse team will faceoff its 96th season Saturday, February 20 when the Terrapins host Michigan at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m. Maryland has won 27 consecutive season-opening games dating back to the 1994 season. The Terps are 91-3-1 all-time in season opening games dating back to the program's first varsity season in 1924.

The Terrapins are currently ranked 5th in the country in this week's USILA Coaches poll, and Inside Lacrosse Media poll.

  • The esteemed No. 1 jersey will be donned by Jared Bernhardt once again, as the Longwood, Fla. native returns for his fifth season in College Park. Bernhardt is a mainstay in the Maryland record books, ranking in the top ten in career goals (131), career points (191) and career extra-man goals (15) while holding the No. 2 spot all-time in single season goals (51) and No. 6 spot in single season points (78).

B1G SEASON AHEAD
  • Maryland is scheduled to play 10 regular season games this season, all against Big Ten competition. All Big Ten teams will meet twice in the regular season. The first half of the schedule includes the first round of games against each of the other five Big Ten opponents. The second half of the schedule will be released by the conference at a later date.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Maryland has never lost to Michigan, holding a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools, which began in 2014. The closest game between the two programs came in 2016, when the Terrapins edged the Wolverines 8-7 in Ann Arbor.

10 is the magic number under tillman
  • Maryland has won 25 consecutive games when allowing an opponent under 10 goals dating back to the 2017 National Championship season. Maryland's last win in the streak came when the Terps sealed a 14-9 win over #5 Notre Dame on February 29. Maryland has been a tough out under head coach John Tillman when allowing under 10 goals, posting a 97-11 record under Tillman since 2011.

  • Maryland returns virtually its entire scoring offense from last season, with 96% of its goals by players currently on Maryland roster. Of the 94 goals scored last season, 91 were scored by players back for the Terps in '21. Additionally, 58 of 60 assists recorded in 2020 were by players on this year's team. Maryland's scoring offense ranked 10th in the nation last season (15.6/g).
