COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jared Bernhardt tallied a game-high six points (4G, 2A), while Maryland's defense held firm as the Terrapins (6-0) took down Rutgers (4-2) 13-9 Sunday afternoon.
Logan Wisnauskas and Kyle Long both helped pace Maryland's offense, totaling two goals and two assists each. Bubba Fairman also turned in a two-goal day.
After a four-goal first quarter from the Scarlet Knights, Maryland's defense locked in only allowing Rutgers five goals in the next 45 minutes of regulation. It was the fourth game this season that Maryland held an opponent to under 10 goals.
Trailng 4-1 towards the end of the first quarter, an Anthony DeMaio EMO goal with 11 seconds remaining would spark a seven-goal Maryland run. Bernhardt would notch a hat trick in the second quarter, while Daniel Maltz, John Geppert and Kyle Long all finished shots to push Maryland to an 8-4 lead.
The Scarlet Knights would get one back before the break, and remained within striking distance with the first goal of the second half to make it 8-6. UMD never allowed the hosts to get back within one, opening up a four-goal lead on goals from Bernhardt and Fairman before the end of the third quarter.
After two straight Rutgers goals, Fairman helped squash any late runs with a timely goal at the 8:35 mark.
Long delivered what was perhaps the biggest play of the afternoon to set up Maryland's last goal, making a big hit to force a turnover on the Rutgers clear. Wisnauskas scooped the ground ball and charged right towards the cage to finish a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie, cementing Maryland's four-goal victory.
The Terps will be back in action on Saturday, April 3 when the team hosts Penn State in College Park. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
