RIO GRANDE, PR - The Maryland men's golf team will make its first and only solo trip of the season outside of the continental U.S. to compete in the 29th annual Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Country Club this weekend (Feb. 13-15). The Grand Reserve is hosting the event for the first time. Last year's edition of the Classic was canceled due to COVID-19. Compared to its tournament last week, the format will return to regular stroke play.
Despite its 1-2 finish at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, the team looks to build momentum early in the season.
Over the three-day tournament, players will tip it out at 7,506 yards on the par-72 PGA Tour-tested golf course.
Just 16 days later, the PGA TOUR will be on the same golf course for the Puerto Rico Open. The individual medalist of the Puerto Rico Classic will receive an invite to play in the event.
"It's a great opportunity for us to go against some of the best teams in the country," said head coach Jason Rodenhaver. "It's an honor for us to be invited to this event. It's one of the premier college events in the country and has been so for nearly 30 years. I'm looking forward to this one."
Two seasons ago (2019-20), the Terps finished in 12th place at the Puerto Rico Classic. Dillon Brown, Florian Huerlimann, Dhaivat Pandya, Chris Tanabe, and Will Koras will all make the trip to compete.
Other teams participating in the Shootout include Oklahoma, Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, East Tennessee State College of Charleston, South Carolina, Marquette, and Big Ten foes Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, and Wisconsin.
