RIO GRANDE, PR - The Maryland men's golf team finished 13th at Puerto Rico Classic this week (Feb. 13-15) at Grande Reserve Golf Club.
During the three-day event, players tipped it out at 7,100+ yards. The venue is also home to the PGA TOUR's Puerto Rico Open, which gets underway in just over three weeks.
Senior Dillon Brown set the tone with 12 birdies throughout the event and near blemish-free final round 67. (He only made one bogey.) Brown's final round 67 moved him up the leaderboard 21 positions to finish in a seven-way tie for 37th (-6) - - (70-73-67).
Over the course of the week, Freshman Florian Huerlimann led the Terps for the first two days of play but still had his best performance in a Maryland uniform to date. Huerlimann finished in a three-way tie for 57th (-1) - - (69-72-74). His first-round 69 is the second and lowest round of his career.
Rodenhaver's Take
Huerlimann: "Florian is going to be a stellar player, but he's young; he has room to grow. But, overall had a great week despite the double bogey he made on the 6th hole during the third round."
"The playing conditions were fantastic, and we had a slight breeze for most of the competition. So, it will be cool to see (Grand Reserve Golf Club) on TV in a few weeks when the (PGA) TOUR comes to town," said head coach Jason Rodenhaver. "It's always an honor to play in this event with some of the best teams in the nation."
