COLLEGE PARK, MD -  The University of Maryland volleyball team (2-1) continues non-conference action at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational hosted by Navy from Friday, September 1 through Sunday, September 3. The Terps open the tournament with Friday's clash against Old Dominion, followed by a Saturday duel against Utah Valley. The invitational closes with a Sunday afternoon matchup against the host Navy.

All tournament matches are slated to take place at the Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse in Annapolis, Maryland. Saturday's match will be streamed on the Utah Valley Athletics YouTube channel, while Sunday's match against Navy will be broadcast on ESPN+.
 
Sunshine State Success
  • To open the 2023 season, the Terps traveled to Coral Gables, FL, for the Canes Classic tournament hosted by the University of Miami.
  • Maryland finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, conquering FIU, 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21), and sweeping Lamar, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-20) to bookend the weekend between a hard-fought four-set defeat at Miami.
  • With the victory over FIU in the season opener, the Terps have claimed their last three season openers along with 10 of their last 11.

The Terps celebrated a season-opening victory over FIU  (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21) last Friday to open the campaign with a win for a third consecutive year.
First-Time Foes
  • Despite playing in neighboring states, Maryland and Old Dominion have yet to face each other on the volleyball court.
  • The Monarchs are one of three opponents Maryland will face for the first time this fall along with Lamar, whom the Terps swept on Saturday, and Le Moyne, who will face Maryland on the final weekend of non-conference action.

Last Time vs. Utah Valley
  • The Terps and Wolverines have only squared off against each other on one occasion, with Maryland sweeping Utah Valley, 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 25-23), on August 28, 2010, at the Tiger Invitational held in Columbia, MO.
  • Mary Cushman and Brittney Grove each pitched in 11 kills in the contest as the Terps hit .362 on the match.

Last Time vs. Navy
  • Maryland maintained its unblemished record against Navy in the most recent matchup between the two programs last season at the XFINITY Center Pavilion on August 26, 2022, sweeping the Midshipmen, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-12).
  • Defense was the name of the game in the last showdown between the in-state rivals, as Rainelle Jones swatted 10 blocks in just three sets to lead the Terps to victory.
  • The Terps' record against Navy entering Sunday's match stands at a perfect 11-0 all time.

Dowler Draws Close To Milestone
  • Senior setter Sydney Dowler returned for her third season in the starting setter role and picked up where she left off in back-to-back 1,000-assist campaigns.
  • In three contests at the Canes Classic, Dowler dished out 30 or more assists in each match, amassing 105 helpers over the tournament.
  • After entering the season with 2,329 career assists, the Oconomowoc, WI, product is primed to record the 2,500th assist of her collegiate career at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational.

With 2,434 assists to her name, Sydney Dowler (8) is inching closer to recording her 2,500th collegiate assist this weekend.
Good Csire
  • Anastasia Russ is back for her redshirt senior year after a tremendous first season with Maryland.
  • Entering the season with 891 career kills, senior outside hitter Sam Csire made strides toward joining the elite 1,000-Kill Club at Maryland at the Canes Classic.
  • Powered by a 17-kill outing against FIU, the Strongsville, OH, native led the Terps with 29 kills on the weekend and increased her career total to 920 kills.
  • If Csire records her 1,000th-career kill, she would become the 15th player in Maryland program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone.

Sam Csire led the Terps with 29 kills at the Canes Classic, including a match-leading 17 kills in the season opener against FIU.
Tuning Into The Transfers
  • Senior libero Lilly Gunter and senior pin hitter Samantha Schnitta both made their regular-season debuts with the VolleyTerps and made an immediate impact in Coral Gables.
  • Gunter, who entered the program with nearly 1,200 digs, suited up as Maryland's libero for all three matches and led the Terps with 44 digs on the weekend by recording double-digit digs in every match.
  • Schnitta earned the start at opposite hitter in the Terps' first two matches, picking up 10 kills in the season-opening win over FIU and leading the squad with 16 kills in a hard-fought lost against Miami. The senior from Overland Park, KS, was the only player to record double-digit kills in multiple matches for Maryland on the weekend.

Samantha Schnitta (1) recorded double-digit kills against FIU and Miami at the Canes Classic, producing a match-high 16 kills against the Hurricanes.
Rohrbach On The Block
  • Freshman middle blocker Eva Rohrbach made her collegiate debut at the Canes Classic, but looked like a veteran in her first three matches.
  • Maryland head coach Adam Hughes named the San Diego, CA, native the starting nod in all three matches on the weekend, giving her a chance to shine on the Terps' block.
  • Rohrbach excelled on both offense and defense, hitting an efficient .528 across the tournament (22k-4e-36a) while recording six blocks in her debut against FIU to finish the weekend with a team-leading 11 total blocks. .

In her collegiate debut, Eva Rohrbach produced nine kills on just 12 attacks for a hitting percentage of .667 while totaling six total blocks against FIU.
Fabulous Freshmen
  • Along with Rohrbach, Maryland's other incoming freshmen — Sydney Bryant, Alex McGillivray and Jonna Spohn — each made their collegiate debut over the weekend.
  • Bryant came on as a substitute late in the first set against Lamar, spraying seven kills across three sets to finish with the second-most kills in the contest.
  • In the opening set against Lamar, McGillivray came on as a defensive specialist and played all three sets, collecting four digs on the afternoon.
  • Spohn appeared in two matches, playing a crucial role in Maryland's comeback attempt against Miami with three digs and a pair of service aces across three sets on the back line.

All four freshmen saw the court at the Canes Classic, with Bryant (left) notching seven kills against Lamar while Rohrbach (right) led the Terps in blocks across the weekend.
2022 In Review
  • Maryland finished the 2022 season with a 16-16 record, along with a 7-13 mark against the Big Ten.
  • For the first time in head coach Adam Hughes' tenure, the Terps won seven games in the Big Ten in back-to-back seasons.
  • One of the key turning points came when Maryland secured sweeps in three consecutive Big Ten road matches for the first time since joining the conference.
  • Maryland's sweep streak was capped off with a dominant win at No. 9 Purdue on Oct. 16, marking the Terps first-ever top-10 road victory.
  • The Terps scored their second upset win of 2022 at the XFINITY Center Pavilion on Nov. 18, with a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Ohio State, ending the Buckeyes' 14-match win streak.
