No. 4 Terps Take 3-1 Victory Over Yale

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 4 Maryland (6-1) closed out the 2023 Terrapin Invitational with a 3-1 win over Yale (1-3). Goals from Margot Lawn, Josie Hollamon, and Hope Rose were enough to push the Terps over a persistent Bulldogs team.

The fifth-year Lawn delivered a standout day on offense, scoring or assisting on all three of the Terps' goals in this game.

Penalty opportunities played a major role in this match as three of the four total scores came off of penalty corners. Maryland earned 10 penalty corners to Yale's six. The Terps also outshot the Bulldogs 18-13.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Lawn got the scoring started early for the Terps, sneaking a shot through a crowded circle. Lawn had another good look that was saved by Yale's goalkeeper just two minutes prior.
  • The first quarter featured a back-and-forth battle for possession, but Maryland's defense prevented Yale from earning any shot opportunities.
  • Rose put up another shot for the Terps in the final seconds of the first that was kicked away by Yale's keeper.
  • Maryland's defense and goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko quashed Yale's hopes of scoring on three separate second quarter penalty corners.
  • Hollamon slapped a shot on target for the Terps' second goal off of a penalty corner taken by Lawn. Lawn connected with Nathalie Fiechter in the circle who made the assist to an awaiting Hollamon.
  • Yale scored off of a penalty corner in the final seconds of the third quarter.
  • Rose brought the Terps back up by two with a goal in the 49th minute off of a penalty corner.
  • A slew of late-game penalty corners looked promising for the Terps but key saves by Yale's keeper held the score at 3-1.
Series Success
  • This game marked the first-ever meeting between Maryland and Yale's field hockey teams.
  • The Terps now hold a 1-0 series advantage over the Bulldogs.

  • 2: Margot Lawn scored her second goal of the season.
  • 5: Lawn now leads the team in assists with five.
  • 5: Maryland has now scored a goal in the first quarter in five out of their seven games this season.
  • 9: Hope Rose stands among the NCAA's top-scorers with nine goals on the season.
  • 22: The Terps have already scored 22 goals this season, while holding their opponents to only five.
Margot Lawn's Take
"It was in our game plan just to pass and receive. So it was really working with our backs to get into the pockets and then get it out. I feel like all-around we did a really good job passing which makes everybody's job easier."

Coach Meharg's Take
"I think we had a lot of good open looks in the field, but being able to execute on penalty corners [was] obviously a very solid way to get on the board."

Up Next
  • Maryland is back home on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. for a Top-25 matchup against No. 15 Princeton.
