Box Score FORT MYERS, FL — Senior outside hitter
Sam Csire recorded her 1,000th career kill as the University of Maryland volleyball team (10-2) closed out non-conference play with its sixth consecutive victory, knocking off host Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2Â (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 17-25, 15-12), in a five-set thriller to win the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic Saturday evening at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, FL.
Â
In the third set, Csire capitalized on a feed from freshman defensive specialist
Jonna Spohn, swinging into a gap in the Eagles defense for her fourth kill of the contest and her 1,000th career finish. The Strongsville, OH, product became the 15th player in Maryland volleyball history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone and the first since Erika Pritchard eclipsed the mark in 2019. She concluded the contest with six kills, eight digs and three blocks.
Â
The Terps received additional contributions from freshman middle blocker
Eva Rohrbach, who finished off a career-high 12 kills with a .632 hitting percentage. Three other Maryland players — sophomore outside hitter
Laila Ivey, senior right side hitter
Laila Ricks and redshirt senior middle blocker
Anastasia Russ — each recorded six or more kills to supplement Csire and Rohrbach.

Florida Gulf Coast never quit despite having its back against the wall. The Eagles fired off an early 7-0 run in the third set and would not allow Maryland to cut the deficit to under five points. In the subsequent frame, Florida Gulf Coast jumped out to a 12-6 advantage, and once the Terps evened the score at 16 apiece, the Eagles compiled a 9-1 run to send the match to a fifth set.
Despite a tight score line throughout, Maryland never budged in the fifth set, opening with a pair of kills from Ivey and never allowing the Eagles to tie or take the lead for the frame's entirety. The Terps opened up an advantage with two 3-1 runs early in the set and opened up an 11-7 lead with a 3-0 run helped by a successful challenge from head coach
Adam Hughes. Florida Gulf Coast responded with a run to make it a one-point set, but Maryland sealed the match with a 5-2 run as Russ took the match-winning swing.
Â
In addition to winning the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic, senior setter
