LANCASTER, PA – A quartet of Terps took home third-place at the Franklin & Marshall Lehman Open on Friday. Maryland had 25 guys compete in the F&M Lehman Open, including eight freshmen competing unattached.
Braxton Brown, Kal Miller, Ethen Miller and Michael North all advanced to their respective semifinals, however they were not able to find wins. All four rebounded in their third-place matches, with Brown. Ethen Miller and North all winning by pin. Brown knocked off No. 18 Dom Zaccone while Kal Miller defeated four-time NCAA qualifier for the second time this season, this time in sudden victory. Miller and North both pinned seeded opponents.
After dropping his first match of the day, King Sandoval pinned four straight opponents and put himself in the final eight remaining wrestlers at 133.
At 184, Chase Mielnik and Kevin Makosy both made impressive runs through the back end, winning three and four matches respectively. Makosy, who also picked up a win in his first match of the day in the Round of 64, advanced to the Consi Round of 8 #2 but the match was declared a no contest due to Makosy hitting his match limit.
Seth Nevills made it to the heavyweight quarterfinals, winning his first three matches by bonus points, but was forced to bow out due to an injury default.
Several Maryland true freshmen, competing unattached, impressed on the day.
At 165, freshman AJ Rodrigues won his first two matches of the day to put himself in the quarterfinals. He finished in the consolation of 8 #2. At 141, a trio of Terps in Dario Lemus, Clayton Gabrielson and Michael Pizzuto combined for nine wins on the day.
