Maryland Softball Hosts Virginia In A Tuesday Matchup

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland softball team will host the Virginia Cavaliers for a Tuesday match-up at 6:00 p.m. The game between Maryland and Virginia is scheduled to be live streamed via BTN+ and live stats will be available for the game.

 
Match up preview
  • Virginia is 15-7 this season.  They have a team batting average of .269 and a team ERA of 1.95 which is 30th in the country.  At the plate, they are lead by Jade Hylton who leads the team in hits with 23 and HR's with 5.  In the circle, Virginia is lead by Madison Harris who has a 0.35 ERA and is currently 4-0 this season.    
  • Virginia will come to College Park after starting the season 15-7. They are currently 4-3 in the last seven games with wins against North Carolina, Longwood and Boston College.  Virginia is coming off of two losses on Sunday against North Carolina.
  • Madison Harris currently leads the ACC in ERA with her 0.35 in four starts this season. Savanah Henley has a 1.65 ERA and is currently #12 in the ACC and Eden Bigham is ranked #14 with a 2.06 ERA.  Virginia is only one of two schools that has three players in the top 15 in pitching statistics in the ACC.
  • Maryland is currently 25-30 all-time against Virginia with their last meeting coming in 2019. The Terps would lose to Virginia in their last meeting 7-1.

  • Maryland is coming off a 1-1 weekend match-up against Boston College. BC would beat Maryland on Friday in the first game of a double header 3-1.  Michaela Jones would bring home the lone run of the game for Maryland with a double down the left field line.  Megan Mikami would have two hits in the game and would steal a base in the fifth inning.  She is now only one stolen base away from tying Vangie Galindo's school record which was set in 2012.      
  • The Terps would bounce back in the second game of the day to defeat Boston College 3-2 in extra innings. Maryland was down to their final out in the seventh inning when Jaeda McFarland smashed a clutch triple to right center field to tie the game up.  It was McFarland's 16th triple of her career to add to her school record.    
  • Freshman Delaney Reefe would be the hero for Maryland, as her RBI double in the bottom of the ninth would score the game winning run. This would be Reefe's second multi-hit game of her young career.
  • In the circle, Courtney Wyche dominated as she pitched nine innings and struck out 11 batters.  11 strikeouts is the second most in a single game this season in the Big Ten and nine innings pitched is currently the most innings pitched in a single game this season by a Big Ten pitcher. It would be Wyche's 38th career complete game and her third win of the season.  
  • The final game of the series on Saturday was canceled due to the weather.

Transfer spotlight
  • Coastal Carolina transfer Diamond Williams continues to make her impact on this Maryland team. Diamond has started in all 21 games at first base. She leads the team in home runs with six and RBIs with 17.
  • Williams is currently third on the team in batting average with a .290.  Williams is currently hitting .296 with runners on base.     
  • Utah State transfer Mazie MacFarlane also has made an immediate impact to the Maryland lineup.  Mazie has started in 20 of the 21 games for the Terps this season.  She currently leads the team in batting average with .333 and is second on the team in hits with 15.

Diamond Williams currently leads the team in HR's with 6 and RBIs with 17.
Moving up the record book
  • Senior outfielder Megan Mikami is just two stolen bases shy of breaking the program record for most stolen bases in a career with 67.  The record is currently held by Vangie Galindo (2009-2012).  Mikami has led the Big Ten in stolen bases in back-to-back years.  
  • Jaeda McFarland is currently fourth all-time in career batting average with a .330 and currently has the school record for most career triples with 16.  McFarland is also fourth in school history in stolen bases and is only 10 back from moving up 
  • Graduate student Courtney Wyche is currently sixth all-time in career strikeouts with 484.  She is just eight strikeouts away from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04). Wyche is also seventh on the all-time innings pitched list.  She has pitched 502.2 innings and is 16.9 innings from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04).
  • Wyche received her 44th win of her career which ranks sixth all-time. She is five wins away from passing Kailtyn Schmeiser (2012-15) and moving into the top five.
  • Courtney pitched her 38th complete game of her career, which is seventh all-time.  She's three away from passing Kerry Hickey (2008-11) for sixth all-time.
