Terps Match Second Best Start In Program History, Beat Georgetown 11-4

Box Score TYSONS, VA – Maryland baseball hit four home runs in its 11-4 win over Georgetown on Tuesday at Capital One Park. The Terps improved to 19-6 on the season, which equals their second-best start in program history. The record matches their 1980 and 1969 record through 25 games. The only better start was in 2022 when Maryland went 20-5.

Maryland plastered eight runs on the scoreboard in the first three innings, highlighted by a grand slam in the third by Elijah Lambros. It was his second home run and the Terps' second grand slam of the season. Maryland led the NCAA with 11 grand slams in 2023. Lambros finished with a season-high four RBIs. He even robbed a home run in the ninth inning to help put the game away.

Sam Hojnar went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double. He racked up three RBIs and two runs. The home run was the Iowa transfer's fifth of the season and he leads the team with 10 doubles.
Devin Russell and Kevin Keister were the other Terps to homer in the ballgame. Russell's was a solo shot and Keister's was a two-run homer as both cracked their third of the season. Russell tallied two RBIs and two runs. Keister added a double to finish with multiple hits.
It was Maryland's second game with four or more home runs this season after hitting five against Charlotte on March 10.
Eddie Hacopian tied his career-high with four hits, going 4-for-5. He also matched his brother, Chris Hacopian, for the most hits in a game for the Terps this season.

Ryan Van Buren pitched 4.2 innings and earned his fourth win of the season. The trio of Nate Haberthier, Omar Melendez and Logan Ott pitched the remainder of the game. Melendez pitched two innings and struck out two batters.

The game was the second of three matchups between Maryland and Georgetown (16-8) this season. The Terps previously took the first game at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, 14-5, on Feb. 27. Maryland is also 13-3 in its last 16 games and has won six of its last seven.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland loaded the bases in the first inning and Sam Hojnar came through with a two-RBI double down the first field line. The Terps took a 2-0 lead after one inning.
  • Georgetown loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Ryan Van Buren got the final two outs to escape the jam and leave all three runners on base.
  • The Terps took a 3-0 lead after a solo home run by Devin Russell to left-center in the second inning.
  • The Hoyas got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Ashtin Gilio.
  • Russell walked with bases loaded in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-1. Elijah Lambros then launched a grand slam over the center field wall to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
  • Owen Carapellotti hit a two-run home run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • The Terps launched two more home runs in the sixth inning. Kevin Keister hit a two-run shot and Hojnar followed with a solo home run to extend the lead to 11-3.
  • Carapellotti homered again for the Hoyas in the seventh, but they trailed 11-4.
  • Lambros robbed Carapellotti of his second home run of the game in the ninth inning to help put the game away.
Swope's Take
"Eddie hit, Keister then gets doubled off and then the next batter was Hojnar, gets into an 0-2 count and ends up working a walk all the way to there," head coach Matt Swope said. "Then we grind out the rest of that and that led to the grand slam. We talk about process with these guys. People don't look at moments like that of how awesome of an at-bat that is to hand it off to the next guy and then obviously the huge grand slam gives us some breathing room. We were able to hit a couple more [home runs] later in the game and cruise to a win."

Lambros On The Offense Clicking
"Just phenomenal, that's the pack through and through. We hit and hit and hit and hit. You saw the home runs, you see Eddie going 4-for-5, you see the grand slam. ... We just finally came together. It was always there, we could always do that and we will continue to do that."
