Track Terps Head To Prestigious Penn Relays Starting Thursday

- The Maryland track and field team will take part in the oldest and most prestigious meets in the nation this week as the Terps head to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. The Penn Relays have been hosted annually since April 21, 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania with more athletes competing than at any other track and field meet in the world. It regularly attracts more than 15,000 participants from high schools, colleges, and track clubs throughout North America and abroad competing in more than 300 events over five days. The Terps will begin competition on Thursday afternoon and will finish on Saturday.

A peek at the scheduLe
  • This will be the seventh meet of the outdoor season leading up to Big Ten Championships in Eugene, OR from May 16-18 and the NCAA Championships in Eugene, OR from June 11-14.
  • Maryland will host two track meets at Kehoe Track & Field this season with the Maryland Invite on March 29 and the Kehoe Twilight Meet on May 2.
2024-25 Group
The Terps are set to compete in eight meets this year to prep for the Big Ten and NCAA Championships.
Virginia Challenge Recap
  • The Terps wrapped up the Virginia Challenge last weekend posting 18 top 10 finishes and four more Maryland all-time performances.
  • On Friday in the field events, Jennessa Wolfe led the way with a third-place finish in the high jump (1.69 meters) followed by Chioma Njoku who placed eighth in the hammer throw invitational (63.24 meters). Morgan Graham rounded out the top-10 performers as she took 10th in the open hammer throw section with a toss of 54.06 meters.
  • Katie Turk led the women's squad on the track with a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters (4:25.53). Kami Joi Hickson placed sixth in the 800 meters invitational with a time of 2 minutes, 7.61 seconds.
  • On the men's side, Isaiah Champman finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (53.54 seconds), while Eric Albright and Jack Barchet finished ninth in the 800 meters invitational (1:48.70) and the 1,500 meters (3:50.90), respectively.
  • In Saturday's action, the Terps had a great showing in the women's 400m  as three finished in the top ten. Crossing in third, Maya Valmon ran a time of 53.76 which moved her from eighth to fifth all-time in the record books. Sam Payne also placed herself in the record books as she finished in sixth place at 54.26 seconds, putting her at seventh all-time. Lydia Robling placed ninth in the event with a time of 54.90 seconds.
  • In the women's triple jump, Tolu Akinduro placed sixth with marks of 12.83m, moving her up to fourth all-time in program history.
  • Katie Turk won her heat in the women's 800m, placing her at fourth overall. She ran a 2:09.88, placing her at tenth all-time in program history.
  • In the men's 800m, Jack Barchet finished in third with a time of 1:50.64. Morgan Graham placed fifth in the women's discus with marks of 52.61m. The women's 4x400 relay team finished in third with a time of 3:39.90. The men's 4x400 also placed top five as they came in fourth place with a time of 3:11.07.

  • Eric AlbrightMax WorleyJustin DePinto, and Matt De Haas competed in the men's 4x800 and ran a time of 7:35.91. The performance ranks fourth all-time at Maryland. 
  • Emma PeggAnna CoffinKatie Turk, and Kami Joi Hickson competed in the 4x800 finishing in 8:50.19. Their time is good for a fifth all-time spot in the record books. 
  • Kayla Thorpe finished second in the championship javelin with a throw of 50.86m
  • Jayla Bynum set a season best in the shot put throwing 15.71m. She placed fourth in the Championship division. 
  • Jeff Kline was back in the circle for the men's shot put and threw 17.76m. He placed fifth in the championship. 
  • Tolulope Akinduro competed in the women's triple jump and finished with a mark of 12.08m finishing ninth in the championship.
  • Morgan Graham returned to the discus circle and threw a 50.06m.
  • Rhys Allen also competed in men's discus and threw 51.49m. Allen threw an outdoor personal best of 17.10m on his last attempt in shot put as well, finishing first overall in the men's collegiate shot put.
  • Eric AlbrightSam FordMax Worley, and Matt De Haas competed in the Distance Medley and ran a 9:43.43 which is now second all time in the record books. They also finished second overall in competition by a narrow margin. 
  • Kevin CollinsAaron AbedinJustin Ofotan and Tanner Leach also competed in the 4x200 and ran 1:26.58 which is now seventh all-time in the record books.
  • Armanie ColemanVictoria TeasleyJewel OfotanKyra Lyles ran in the women's 4x100 and ran 46.41 seconds which also qualified them for finals tomorrow. Their time was also ranked third overall.
  • Kamari Trotz, Ofotan, Collins, Leach competed in the men's 4x100 and clocked in a time of 41.02. 
  • Mekhi Abbott threw in the men's javelin and launched a 57.77m on his third attempt.
  • Coleman and Lyles also competed in the 4x200 along with Tolu Akinduro and Samantha Payne. The squad ran 1:38.48 and finished ninth.
  • Kayla Thorpe was back in the shot put circle and launched a 14.24m. 
  • Anna Coffin improved on her personal best and third all-time record and ran a 4:20.64 in the women's 1500m.  
  • Rose Coats competed in the women's 10,000m for the first time as a freshman and finished with a time of 36:44.43, which also puts her in ninth place all-time in school history.
  • Andrew Harmon competed in the men's hammer throw and launched a 56.39.  
  • Katie Altieri ran in the women's 5000m and finished with a 17:14.51.

  • 26 Terps are among the programs all-time Top 10 on both men's and women's outdoor track teams. 
  • Eric Albright currently holds the record for the 800 meters (1:47.32).
  • Jack Barchet ranks ninth in the 800 meters (1:50.22) and tenth in the 1500m (3:48.32).
  • Isaiah Chapman ranks ninth in the men's 400m hurdles (51.64 seconds).
  • Roman Spikes ranks ninth in the men's 200m (21.22 seconds).
  • The foursome of Joshua Goffe, Mykel Morman, Tanner Leach, and Roman Spikes rank fifth in the men's 4x200 (1:26.05) and fourth in the men's 4x100 (40.30 seconds).

Olympians In Paris
  • A trio of Terps competed this past summer in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Maryland celebrated as Thea LaFond won Gold in the triple jump becoming the first Track Terp to medal in the Olympic games. LaFond posted a mark of 15.02 meters (49-feet, 3.5 inches) - a new Dominica national record in the event. She was the 10th Gold medalist in Maryland history and the first Terp student-athlete to win Gold since Vicky Bullett in 1988.
  • With a throw of 77.92 meters, Maryland track and field assistant throws coach Rudy Winkler placed sixth in the hammer throw finals. The mark was his best effort at the Olympic games after he posted marks of 71.89 meters in 2016 (Rio) and 77.08 meters in 2021 (Tokyo). The sixth-place finish was also his best showing at the Olympics improving upon his previous high of seventh in Tokyo.
  • Chioma Onyekwere represented Nigeria in the discus after making her second Olympic games.
  • Additionally, assistant coach Danielle Siebert served as Women's Head Manager for Team USA – her second straight Olympic Games on the staff.
