Maryland Ends Regular Season With Loss To Clemson

April 13, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's tennis team closed out their 2003 regular season today with a 7-0 loss to No.30 Clemson. The Terps were hoping to catch the Tigers off guard who yesterday won a close match against Virginia, 4-3. Head Coach Jim Laitta was very pleased with the Terps on court effort as two Terrapins pushed their opponents to three sets.

"Clemson is just a very good team," said Laitta. "I am very happy with how our team played. Chris and Scott were able get to three sets. We played very well."

Coach Laitta and his team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Wednesday to compete in the ACC Championships.

Clemson claimed all three doubles matches, 8-4, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the match.

In his last regular season match, senior co-captain Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) fought hard in his last home match as a Terp. He was down 5-2 in the first set and stormed back, winning, 7-6. However, he dropped the second set to Micah Thompson 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, Thompson edged Chiu 10-6. Chiu finished the regular season 10-10, 1-5 in the ACC.

Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Ma.) stole the first set from Clemson's John Boetsch, 6-4, but he lost the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-3 respectively.

David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) dropped his first set to Damiisa Robinson, 6-4. He stepped up in the second set, nearly making the draw even, but was held off, 7-5.

The Terps finish the season just under .500 with a 10-11 record. Eluding the Terps this season was an ACC victory.

In the ACC Championships the Terps will face No. 1 seed Duke University on Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Earlier in the season, the Terps lost to Duke, 6-1 on April 25. Scott Peters was the lone Terp to capture a win against Duke.
