COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's tennis team was defeated by Wake Forest University, Sunday, 7-0, at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps fall to 5-6, 0-5 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons rise to 8-6, 1-0 in the ACC.
In doubles, the Terps duo of Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Ian Bliss (Plainview, N.Y.) came out swinging in the No. 1 doubles spot. However, they could not get past Brett Ross and Andrew Hamar. Wake took the 8-5 win in the top doubles slot.
The Deacs took the lead for good, sweeping the two remaining doubles matches. Troy Demers (Anapolis, Md.) and Chase Dawson (Timonium, Md.) were stunned in the No. 2 spot, losing 8-0 to David Lowenthal and Andrew Simpson. Scott Fink (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) were downed 8-2, by Todd Paul and Joe Bates.
Singles action was dominated by the Demon Deacons. Demers climed back up in the top singles spot for the Terps. The Terps' junior co-captain fell 6-7, 6-2 to David Lowenthal.
Scott Peters made his first appearance in the No. 2 singles spot for the Terrapins. He was defeated by Todd Paul, 6-1, 6-1.
Bliss, a junior transfer, nearly claimed his first conference victory as a Terp. In the No. 3 spot, Bliss took the first set, 6-4, from Andrew Hamar. Bliss was edged in the second set, 6-7, to push the match to a super-tie-breaker. But Hamar kept Wake perfect on the day, coming out on top in the tie-breaker, 13-11.
Fink lost 6-4, 7-6, to Brett Ross in the NO. 4 spot. Freshman John O'Rourke (Merion, Pa.) lost to Liron Strauss 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot.
Reichsfeld faced off against Joe Bates in the No. 6 slot. He was defeated in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6.
Maryland travels to North Carolina, Tuesday, for a conference matchup starting at 2:30.
