James "Turkey" Tillman joined the Terrapins after an outstanding career at Eastern High in nearby Washington. D.C. where he averaged 21.3 points a game but was even more impressive as a rebounder and defensive player. "Turk" was the only player to start for Eastern's number one ranked teams in 1973-74 and 1974-75. An outstanding leaper he plays the wing position in Coach Driesell's offensive scheme. He was selected the MVP in the Capital Classic, after scoring 24 points, following his senior year at Eastern. He played in 20 games as a freshman, scoring 108 points and pulling in 44 rebounds. He scored in double figures in three of his first four collegiate games with his season high of 18 points in the Boston University game. He scored 13 against DePauw and had 10 in his first collegiate game and later added 10 against Navy at the Capital Centre.
