As a senior (2019): Team Captain...Academic All-Big Ten...appeared in all 17 games primarily as a short stick defensive midfielder…called into action at close defense in both NCAA tournament games, earning first career starts against Towson and Virginia...caused a turnover and took a shot vs. Bucknell (2/2)...took a shot and grabbed a ground ball vs. Penn (2/16)...snagged ground ball vs. #16 Colgate (2/19)...picked up ground ball at Navy (2/23)...posted season-high two ground balls vs. Michigan (4/6)...earned first career start in NCAA Tourney win at sixth-seeded Towson (5/12)...started at close defense again vs. third-seeded Virginia.
International: Selected to compete for the Puerto Rican National Team in the 2018 Lacrosse World Championships in Israel (July 12-21).
As a junior (2018): Appeared in all 18 games as one of the team's top short stick defensive midfielders ... posted 11 ground balls and caused three turnovers ... posted a ground ball against Marist (2/13) ... had three ground balls and caused a turnover at High Point (2/17) ... had a ground ball and a caused turnover at #17 Michigan (3/31) ... had a ground ball against Robert Morris (5/13) in NCAA First Round.
As a sophomore (2017): Appeared in 13 games at short stick midfield for 2017 National Champions ... totaled three ground balls and three caused turnovers ... made season debut at St. Joseph's (2/14) ... had a ground ball vs. High Point (2/18) ... had a ground ball and a caused turnover in NCAA first round vs. Bryant (5/14).
As a freshman (2016): Appeared in one game, making collegiate debut at Princeton (3/12).
Before Maryland: Won a pair of New York state titles at Chaminade High School … a two-time NSCHSAA All-League selection in 2014 and 2015 … ranked the 82nd overall recruit in the 2015 class and 27th overall midfielder by Inside Lacrosse … also starred in football and basketball … won five total NSCHSAA Championships (2 lacrosse, 2 basketball, 1 football) … a two-time NSCHSAA All-League selection in basketball … a 1000-point scorer in basketball … played club lacrosse for Long Island Express.
Personal: Parents are Tim and Tara O'Connell … born in Mineola, New York … has a younger brother, Michael, who is also a talented lacrosse player.
