Nov. 23, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On the same day that LaMont Jordan was named his team's most valuable player and
offensive player of the year, he also was named a second-team All-American and one of eight
semifinalists for the prestigious Doak Walker national running back award.
Jordan, just a junior, is primed to return in 2000 as one of the elite players in the
college football spotlight. The holder of Maryland's single-season and single-game rushing
records, the Terrapin tailback is just 90 yards from holding the Terps' career mark, as
well, and just over 1,300 yards from the career rushing standard in the Atlantic Coast
Conference. By comparison, his 1,632 yards in 1999 were the best-ever by an ACC junior.
Just over 1,700 yards will place Jordan among the top 10 rushers in NCAA history and push
him past the 5,000-yard rushing plateau.
Also this week, Jordan was tabbed as a candidate for this year's Heisman Trophy, in a
column appearing in The Sporting News. TSN's Heisman Watch of Nov. 22 tabs Jordan as one of
21 nationally-prominent stars worth consideration for the 1999 Heisman.
In the meantime, Jordan awaits the naming of three Doak Walker Award finalists on
Thursday, Dec. 2, and the naming of the 1999 winner on Dec. 9. Fans can show their support
for favorite Doak Walker award semifinalists by voting in a national Doak Walker Award poll
on ESPN.com.
