Applied Sport Science In support of the University of Maryland-College Park and Athletic Department Missions, the Applied Sport Science Department assists in the physical preparation of the student-athlete. Our mission is to enhance sport performance and minimize risk of injury by gathering and analyzing data using state of the art technology and evidence based research.

Vision Statement:
Utilize latest technology and scientific principles to collect, analyze and present data for the performance team to make informed decisions for athlete performance and wellness.

Broadcast & Production Creative Video
The Maryland Athletics Department is looking for students to assist with creative video production. This internship program allows students an opportunity to get real-world creative video experience by using high-end cinematography equipment to produce compelling short-form and long-form video content.

Students will learn how to use video equipment such as DSLR and mirrorless camera bodies, cinema cameras, interchangeable lenses, studio lighting equipment, wireless microphone systems and the Adobe creative suite. Interns will gain experience in all phases of the production process, including; script writing, pre-production, studio filming, live-action filming, sound design, color grading, logging and file management practices.

As part of our team, students will create short-form and long-form video content including match-day hype videos and game highlights for multiple Terrapin sports teams and for our industry-leading streaming platform, Terrapin Club+. Opportunities to work men’s basketball & football games are present.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Create short-form and long-form video content for Maryland Athletics

Broadcast | TerpVision
The Broadcast Student Role will work as a member of the Broadcasting & Production Unit within the Maryland Athletic Department and report to the Assistant Director of Broadcast and Video Operations. The Broadcast Student Role will work individually and as part of a team to execute the production of Maryland Athletics videoboard shows.

This position will lead professional freelance and student crews in executing events for the Athletic Department and Special Events. This role will work with the Broadcast unit to help facilitate the scheduling, set-up, and execution of in-venue video board programming. This will include identifying students and professional freelancers, training, and establishing procedures for the broadcast of games in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Broadcast and Video Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities:
TerpVision (60%)
  • Work alongside Assistant Director of Broadcast and Video Operations to facilitate and produce video board shows and other live events for the athletic department
  • Serve as the lead student Producer for Women’s Field Hockey and one additional Spring Sports TerpVision show needed •Work alongside B1G+ Crews to produce hybrid board shows
  • Collaborate with other units to create and execute ideas that enhance the fan experience
  • Load videos, prepare content, assist in staffing and scheduling, produce events, assist with on-site operation of TerpVision Video Board Shows for Women’s Field Hockey and select events, and assist in managing live event streaming of selected special events
  • Edit, manage, and load in-game TerpVision video board show content (Game in Progress, in-game graphics, live bugs, special recognitions, welcomes, in-game features, etc.)
  • Train and assist student staff and professional freelance crew on control room equipment, venue setup, operating procedures and run of show
Broadcast Support (20%)
  • Assist with Press Conferences for athletic teams and Special Events requested
  • Assist with media asset management focusing on both archival and budget responsibilities
Maintenance Support (15%)
  • Work with the Chief Engineer that all broadcast equipment utilized on game days returns back to Broadcast in proper condition
  • Assist with control room and video board tech support (test video boards, maintenance of control room video equipment, and troubleshooting technical issues)
  • Assist TV partners on game days and troubleshoot TV-related technical issues
Other Duties (5%)
  • Work with all Broadcasting and Production department units with any projects outside of essential duties
  • Work with outside production companies and contractors, as well as any other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience and/or training required in video production, communication, graphic design, or related field
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Sports Live Production
  • Experience in control room positions and setup, including but not limited to Technical Directing, Producing, Directing, Graphics & Replay
  • Flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Required to maintain at least 10 hours per week in the office
  • Available for all Women’s Field Hockey home games and Selected Spring Sport

B1G+ Student U Program
The Maryland Athletics Department is seeking out students to assist with its B1G+ Student U Program. The Student U Program, the only paid broadcast-related on-campus opportunity, allows students the chance to get real-world production experience by using state-of-the-art equipment to produce games for the B1G+ platform. Students will learn how to use industry-standard switchers, EVS replay systems, various graphics machines, professional cameras, and much more.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the game-day operations for B1G+ Student U
  • Learn and serve in the following positions:

    • Director
    • Technical Director
    • Camera Operator
    • Replay Operator
    • Graphics Operator

Compliance The University of Maryland Athletics Compliance Office is committed to the principle of institutional control and operating its athletics program in a manner that is consistent with the letter and spirit of NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations. We are here to assist coaches, prospective student-athletes, current student-athletes, athletics representatives, and all other entities that support our 20 sports. As a whole, our goal is to preserve the integrity of the University of Maryland by establishing an atmosphere of education and responsibility; specifically, as it pertains to the rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA and Conference.

Report to the Assistant Director for Compliance and will be a member of the University of Maryland Athletics Compliance Office. The individual will work closely with other members of the Athletics Compliance unit. This position will serve all student-athletes, coaches, and UMD ICA staff members and will assist with monitoring of all NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University of Maryland rules and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Official visit paperwork- input PSA declaration, SA Host form, ect; audit once a month
  • NCAA Eligibility Center preliminary evaluations
  • Rules Education document updates
  • Update Transfer Portal entries
  • Assist in annual reporting- Competition reports- create and input, finalize TMP Summaries
  • Assist in processing NCAA violations and waivers in LSDBi

Minimum Qualifications:

Equipment The University of Maryland Equipment department will challenge the status quo by being committed to providing a distraction free environment and provide support for both student athletes and coaches to achieve their goals of athletic excellence for the University of Maryland. We will focus on athlete safety, provide excellent customer service and promote the Maryland brand. The equipment room internship program will provide interns with the opportunity to work within the athletic equipment room in a behind the scenes role. This position is designed to offer a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience in inventory management and athletic laundry services. This position will work directly with student athletes, coaches, support staff and admin on a daily basis. Hours are flexible depending on individual schedules.

Facilities, Operations & Events The University of Maryland Athletics Facilities, Operations and Events (FOE) team is responsible for the effective management of all athletic facilities, event operations, scheduling, staffing and daily operations. The FOE team is currently looking for interns to help aid our department in future endeavors. These positions are critical to the success of this unit. Student staff members are required to attend orientation(s), meetings, and trainings throughout the year, so they are knowledgeable and efficient in policies and procedures, athletic facilities, sponsored sports, event types and operations, and position responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Minimum of 10 office hours weekly, no maximum amount of hours (specific days/hours to be determined)
  • Provide assistance with the set-up, operation and breakdown of the department’s events
  • Report to the Director, the Associate Director and the Assistant AD of Facilities, Operations & Events
  • Work closely with internal and external constituencies to coordinate athletics contests
  • Be on-site and available throughout selected athletics events to assist in the operation
  • Act with the interest of the University of Maryland Athletics Department
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 office hours weekly, no maximum amount of hours (specific days/hours to be determined)
  • Complete a background screening and onboarding requirements
  • Completion of one semester of academic training at an accredited institution in a undergraduate or graduate program directly related to the summary of duties

Football The Maryland Football Program has internship opportunities in several different football departments. Please read descriptions carefully and select two internship opportunities that best fit your interests and skills. Paid internships are not directly available; however, opportunities to earn a paid internship are offered based on seniority.

Recruiting:
Assist the Director of On-Campus Recruiting with gameday recruiting events, unofficial and official visits, and provide hospitality to football visitors. Must be willing to work front desk shifts of the Jones-Hill House main lobby. Customer service skills required. Must be willing to give tours or our football facility and Maryland’s campus. (minimum lifting 30 pounds, must be able to stand for long periods of time) Hiring periods for Recruiting Interns take place in: February, May and August)

Player Personnel/Scouting:
Assisting our Player Personnel and Scouting staff in organizing potential recruits and prospects. Must have a basic knowledge of the sport along with use of Hudl and excel/google drive. Ability to learn quickly - will teach the recruiting softwares. Ability to work summer prospect camps and do physical labor (minimum lifting 30 pounds)

Football Operations:
Supporting operations staff with organization of travel, budgets, and team events. Administrative support with spreadsheets, organizing player and team data, and office supplies. Must be willing to work front desk shifts of the Jones-Hill House main lobby. Customer service skills required. Must be proficient in google & microsoft office suites. (minimum lifting 30 pounds)

Graphic Design:
At directions under football’s Graphic Designer to help create innovative graphic designs for our recruiting department and social media accounts. Must be proficient in Photoshop.

Video/Coaches Film:
Support coaches and players with filming practices, workout and games. Must commit to attending entire practices including setup and breakdown of camera equipment. (minimum lifting 30 pounds and must be able to stand for long periods of time)

Equipment:
Must be able to work the hours of 2pm-6pm on weekdays. Setup and breakdown of practice equipment for in-season practice and spring ball season. Must be able to attend practices and willing to assist with laundry and equipment clean-up after practices (may be some later hours included) (Minimum lifting 30/50 pounds, physical labor required, must be able to stand for long periods of time). Hiring periods for Equipment Managers take place in: February, April and July.

Nutrition:
Help with setup and breakdown of meals and post workout fueling tables. Assisting our Director of Football Nutrition with organization, incoming food deliveries, or any tasks to prepare for workouts and daily nutrition needs. (minimum lifting 30 pounds)

Graphic Design The Maryland Sports Graphic Internship Program is designed to introduce undergraduate students to the field of graphic design and marketing by providing hands-on experience in creating designs to market and promote Maryland’s NCAA Division-I athletic programs. During the internship, interns will develop and improve competencies in digital design, photo editing, teamwork, customer service, organization, time management, goal setting, personal accountability, and problem-solving. Interns will also gain knowledge and expertise in marketing, game presentation, fan experience, and many other areas.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with staff memers to create graphics for all Division 1 sports programs
  • Create original designs for promotional and marketing materials
  • Create designs for live sporting events
  • Research and stay up to date on current design trends
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Be a current full-time University of Maryland Student (12 credit hours)
  • Experience with and fluent with The Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.)

GSAC The Mary & Barry Gossett Center for Academic & Personal Excellence (GSAC) is among the most comprehensive and successful athletic programs in the National Collegiate Athletic Association sponsoring 20 sport programs and serving over 500 student-athletes. It consists of academic services and student-athlete development. The University of Maryland is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the Big Ten Conference, and the NCAA. GSAC is located in Gossett Hall and serves over 500 student-athletes and is open 5 days a week for over 60 hours.
 
About the GSAC Tutorial Support Program
The Tutorial Support Program at GSAC is designed to promote academic achievement and independence by providing individualized, high-quality academic support in a collaborative and inclusive environment. Our tutors and educational assistants play a vital role in helping student-athletes thrive in the classroom while managing the demands of elite athletics. Working closely with Academic Counselors and Learning Specialists, the tutorial team enhances content understanding, critical thinking, and executive functioning skills—empowering student-athletes to reach their highest potential.

Program Objectives:
  • Promote Independent Learning: Equip student-athletes with the skills and confidence to take ownership of their academic success.
  • Provide High-Quality, Course-Specific Support: Deliver accurate and engaging content review aligned with university curricula.

About the GSAC Learning Support Program
Learning Support Services (LSS) is dedicated to supporting the educational development of student-athletes by creating personalized academic plans that foster both academic achievement and personal growth.The program focuses on offering structured support to student-athletes who are academically at risk, using current course materials to guide instruction. It also addresses areas where students may need improvement in academic skills and learning strategies. The ultimate goal is to help students build the tools they need to become confident, independent, and self-reliant learners.

Program Objectives:

  • Foster Skill Building: Teach organizational skills, time management strategies and build confidence to foster educational success.

  • Educational Assistant: Facilitate individualized and small group sessions tailored to assist in the educational development of student-athletes. Guide students in developing effective academic strategies, such as study techniques, note-taking, writing and research skills, time management, and test-taking approaches. Alongside instructional responsibilities,carry out administrative tasks that align with the goals of GSAC Academic Support Services, including maintaining session reports, managing schedule changes, participating in training and meetings, and completing Workday timesheets.

Marketing The Fan Development & Event Marketing Promo Crew Program is designed to introduce undergraduate students to the field of sports marketing by providing hands-on experience in the marketing and promotion of Maryland’s NCAA Division-I athletic programs. During the course of the internship, interns will develop and improve competencies in teamwork, customer service, organization, time management, goal setting, personal accountability, and problem solving. Promo Crew members will also gain knowledge and expertise in marketing, game presentation, fan experience, and many other areas.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Support marketing team to execute gameday marketing & fan experience efforts for various sports
  • Assist in coordinating game-day promotions, sponsor activations, and fan engagement activities to enhance the overall experience.
  • Provide excellent customer service to fans, sponsors, and partners by responding to inquiries and resolving issues promptly.
  • Opportunities to learn within the sports office environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Nutrition The University of Maryland Sports Nutrition Department strives to provide up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition education, counseling, and food service to all student athletes in order to maximize performance and improve overall health. Our vision is to serve as a nutrition resource for student athletes, coaches, and staff by providing first class nutrition education and counseling while also improving the food selection and availability to all student athletes through utilization of feeding deregulations and vitamin/mineral supplementation within NCAA regulations. Our student volunteers play an integral role in assisting our student athletes in fueling and recovering at our fueling stations.

The primary role of the sports nutrition volunteers will be to assist the Sports Nutritionist with the stocking, cleaning, and distributing NCAA-compliant food and/or supplements to student-athletes in the Xfinity Center, Gossett Hall, and Jones Hill House Weight rooms. Through these tasks and projects you will be supporting the development of the Sports Nutrition Department at the University of Maryland, while also gaining invaluable experience and exposure to the nutritional needs of Division I student-athletes and the day-to-day duties of a collegiate sports dietitian.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Assist with:
  • Food orders, menu creation, post practice recovery, etc

XFINITY Center and Gossett Hall Weight Room: (shifts between 6am-6pm)
  • Ensure sport supplements and snacks are fully stocked at all times
  • Monitor inventory of sport supplements and snacks; check dates and apply the first-in-first-out method
  • Stock, organize and inventory sport supplements and snacks
  • Keep the nutrition bar clean throughout your shift
  • Keeping nutrition education materials available and up to date
  • Create and participate in weekly food tastings and/or demos alongside other Sports RDs
Jones Hill House: (shifts between 6am-6pm)
  • Ensure fueling station is stocked and clean at all times
  • Help set out pre- and post- workout recovery nutrition
  • Organize storage area as necessary - ensure FIFO is being utilized and all dates are present on inventory
  • Receive shipments and put away inventory in a timely manner
  • Take inventory of products - notifying the sports RDs when items are low
  • Help create education materials under guidance of sports RDs

Sports Medicine Description: This internship gives undergraduate students the opportunity to gain exposure in a competitive sports medicine setting. Interns will spend time helping athletic trainers in the training room, during practice, and on the sideline during Maryland athletic competitions. Licensed Athletic Trainers can be observed while performing orthopedic evaluations, leading student-athletes through a variety of rehabilitation programs, and providing care during B1G competitions.

Class Credit: Undergraduate students can earn up to 3 credits per semester for participating in internships. Only KNES majors can receive credit. The credit breakdown is as follows:
  • 2 Credits: 90 hours minimum- 9 Hours Per Week
  • 3 Credits: 135 hours minimum- 12 Hours Per Week
Volunteer Status: If you are not interested in receiving class credit for this internship, or are not a KNES major, you will be considered a Volunteer Intern. These interns should prepare to dedicate between 10-12 hours minimum each week to their assigned position.

Course Recommendations:
  • KNES 282- This course will be highly recommended during your first semester in the program. If you are not currently enrolled for the upcoming semester, please reach out to Dr. Klossner at jklossne@umd.edu.
Clinical Settings: Students can work in one of 5 clinical settings listed below:
  • Jones Hill House - This setting houses the University of Maryland Football team. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work with football student-athletes in the training room, during practice, and on the game field. Of the four settings, this is the most time demanding. Students will need to be available for all afternoon practices during the week and all games on the weekends. Some travel to away games is required.
  • Gossett Team House: This training room now houses our Men’s Lacrosse, Cross Country and Men & Women’s Track and Field teams.
  • Varsity Team House - Adoringly known as VTH, this training room houses Men’s and Women’s soccer, and Baseball.
  • XFINITY Center- This state of the art facility is the home of Wrestling, Volleyball, Golf, Cheer, Gymnastics and Tennis.
  • Field Hockey/Lacrosse- This new facility houses our Women's Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams.
Strength & Conditioning In support of the University of Maryland-College Park and Athletic Department Missions, the Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning Department physically prepares the student-athlete for the rigors of intercollegiate athletics. Our mission is to enhance sports performance and minimize the risk of injury by improving strength, power, speed, stability, and conditioning through a sport-specific, evidence-based program administered in a safe, competitive environment.

Strategic Communications & Content Development SOCIAL MEDIA
The Department of Strategic Communications and Content Development oversees all media relations, public relations, social media, website/digital media, writing and content development for Maryland’s 20 athletic teams.

The University of Maryland Athletics Strategic Communications and Content Development department is looking for social media student interns for the upcoming year. This is a terrific way to get hands-on experience working in the athletics industry for those who see themselves having a future career in sports (either the college or professional ranks), public relations, or other similar communications jobs.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the ideation, creation, capturing, and distribution of content on Maryland Athletics social media channels
  • Contribute ideas to Maryland's communications and social media team
  • Provide real-time social media coverage at events in support of Maryland's social media and communications staff
  • Stay in tune with broader social media trends and relate them back to Maryland's social media goals
  • Assist with social media calendars and analytics tracking
  • Opportunity to work with graphic design, photography and videography staff to hone content creation skills

CONTENT WRITER
The Department of Strategic Communications and Content Development oversees all media relations, public relations, social media, website/digital media, writing and content development for Maryland’s 20 athletic teams.

The University of Maryland Athletics Strategic Communications department is seeking creative, self-driven student content writers with excellent writing and organizational skills. The primary role will be identifying, developing, and writing feature stories on Maryland athletic programs, student-athletes, alumni, and donors for online and print communications. Additional writing assignments could include game previews and game recaps.

You'll work with our in-house strategic communications team, as well as numerous external relations departments, to help advance our brand voice through your writing.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Open to enrolled University of Maryland students only
  • Applicants can be taking classes towards a bachelor's or master’s degree
  • Must possess strong communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of AP Style is preferred
  • Previous writing experience is preferred
This is an unpaid position, but could lead to paid writing assignments in the future.

The Terrapin Club Intern plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our office and providing exceptional customer service to our esteemed donors. This position is designed to offer a comprehensive learning experience in donor relations and office administration within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Respond to questions from donors and fans via email, phone, etc.
  • Provide support to Major Gift, Annual Fund, and Operations teams through research, donor prospecting, social media management, marketing, and game day event assistance
  • Assist with various Backstage Pass Experiences
  • Execute outreach to recent graduates to join the Terrapin Club Young Alumni Program
  • Assist with acquiring new donors and upgrading levels of current donors

Ticketing Ticket Office
The UMD ticket office internship programs provide interns with the opportunity to work in an athletic ticket office, specifically in a game-day setting as they learn elite customer service and sales skills. Ticket office staff members serve as the front arm of Maryland Athletics customer service, providing premiere customer service to our fans, donors and season ticket holders while also communicating ticket office initiatives and policies clearly and effectively. Our long-term vision is that select students are able to move from the student program into the internship upon graduation.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide premier customer service to fans, donors and season ticket holders
  • Assist with window and phone sales for all ticketed events using Paciolan software
  • Communicate ticket, parking and donor information to all fans for athletic events
  • Daily distribution of electronic and physical tickets
  • Supervise ticket operations for two of the following sports for the fall/winter/spring: women's soccer, volleyball, wrestling, women's lacrosse and baseball
  • Assist with ticket operations for all football and men's basketball games
  • Collaborate with the Marketing department on ticket sales strategies and timelines to accomplish revenue and attendance goals
  • Assist with outbound sales efforts
  • Develop skills in sales, service, operations and NCAA Compliance
  • Assist with all Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament ticket operations on campus
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least one year of experience in customer service
  • Paciolan experience is helpful but not required
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to work weekends and holiday hours and potentially some travel
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time (one-year appointment)

SALARY: $18.00 per hour. With potential to earn overtime pay.

This ticket office internship operates as an entry-level job and is a full-time position. This position is for a full year and will require some weekend and holiday hours.

Student Assistant
The UMD ticket office internship programs provide interns with the opportunity to work in an athletic ticket office, specifically in a game-day setting as they learn elite customer service and sales skills.
