Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is the Terrapin Club?

The Terrapin Club is the fundraising arm of the athletic department that funds the student-athlete experience by providing the resources necessary for over 500 student-athletes to succeed at the highest level in the classroom, in competition, and in the community.

What methods of contributing are available?

Direct Gifts: Direct gifts are the most common way of contributing. They are made in the form of cash, checks, or credit card. Stocks are also accepted as direct gifts, but can only be used towards your Impact Fund contribution.

Pledged Gifts: A pledge is a promise to make a contribution spread out over a set period of time. Pledges may be made over a maximum of five years and pledges are available for all Victory Circle gifts.  If you are interested in making a pledged gift, please contact us at (301) 314-7020 or at tclub@umd.edu

Matching Gifts: You may have the opportunity to double or even triple the value of your gift. Contact your Human Resources department regarding your eligibility to offer a matching gift. Check the University of Maryland's matching gift database to find out if your company participates in matching gifts.

Donor Advised Funds: are accepted for donations to the Impact Fund as long as all benefits are declined. Donor advised funds cannot be used to satisfy giving requirements for ticket and parking benefits.

Gifts of Real Estate: A gift of your appreciated real property (your home, vacation property, vacant land, farmland, commercial property, etc.) can make a great gift. Click here to learn more about making a gift of real estate.

Gifts of Retirement Assets: A gift of your retirement assets [IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax deferred plan] is an excellent way to make a gift to the impact fund. Your retirement assets may be transferred to us by completing a beneficiary designation form provided by your plan custodian. Click here to learn more about making a gift of retirement assets.

Gifts of Insurance: If your life insurance policy is no longer needed or will no longer benefit your survivors, consider making a gift and help further our mission. Click here to learn more about making a gift of insurance.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

It depends on what kind of donation you make. Any gifts to Athletics outside of the Per Seat Contribution are tax-deductible minus the fair-market value of benefits

I am a former student-athlete, how do I get involved?

The M Club Foundation exists within the University of Maryland Athletic Department to provide former Terrapin athletic letterwinners the opportunity to continue to be involved in Maryland Athletics once their eligibility has expired. There are no better ambassadors for Maryland Athletics than those who have competed while wearing the Terrapin colors. The M Club provides these former student-athletes with the avenue to give back to the institution that they represented so well. Click here to learn more about the M Club.

I am a recent University of Maryland graduate, how do I get involved?

The Terrapin Club offers an exclusive membership opportunity for Young Alumni of the University of Maryland.  Becoming a Terrapin Club Young Alumni Member is an excellent way to stay connected with Maryland Athletics and make a difference for Terrapin student-athletes.  University of Maryland graduates who have completed their degree in the last five years have the opportunity to become members of the Terrapin Club and purchase football and men's basketball tickets at a discounted rate. Click here for more information on Young Alumni memberships.

Am I able to use a company matching gift program towards my Annual Fund or Victory Circle membership?

With the new tax legislation, your organization may no longer provide a matching gift to the Seating Fund. Contributions to the Impact Fund will qualify for most charitable matching gift programs. Please contact your employer to see if you are eligible for a matching gift program or check www.matchinggifts.com/umd.

Annual Giving

Why should I become a Terrapin Club member?

Terrapin Club members are the team behind Maryland's student-athletes, providing opportunities for 500+ student-athletes to succeed in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community. While it would be impossible to reciprocate the level of generosity provided by Terrapin Club members, providing benefits is one of the ways Maryland Athletics can show its gratitude for member support.

All tickets, parking, events, and recognition benefits are based on Terrapin Club annual giving level and lifetime giving to Maryland Athletics. Click HERE for more information on annual memberships.

How is my annual gift used?

Contributions to the Terrapin Club are used to support the academic and athletic endeavors of 500+ Maryland student-athletes by providing scholarship support each year.

What are the benefits of being a member?

There are many benefits to becoming a Terrapin Club member. Benefits vary by giving level and also differ based on the designation between the Seating Fund and Impact Fund. Review the list of benefits here.

How does the Auto Pay Program work?

The Auto Pay Program enables you to debit your checking account or credit card on the last business day of each month. For example, if you are a Silver member ($135/year) participating in this program, your checking account will be debited $11.25 per month for 12 months. All Terrapin Club donations are due in full by June 1st. If you begin the Auto-Pay program after June 1st you will be sent a balance due for the remainder of your pledge. Terpoints for contributions made via the Auto-Pay Program are awarded as each monthly payment is received. For more information please contact the Terrapin Club office at 301.314.7020 or e-mail tclub@umd.edu.

Parking locations for men’s basketball are allocated based on annual giving level and are subject to reassignment on a year-by-year basis should the membership level drop. Seat locations for men’s basketball are based on Terpoints and every four years, the Terrapin Club holds a reseating process (Seat Adjustment), giving all members the opportunity to improve their seating based on their Terpoint priority. For more information on Seat Adjustment, click HERE.

What are Terpoints and how are they accumulated?

Members of the Terrapin Club earn priority points (Terpoints) that are used to determine their overall ranking among all active members. The Terrapin Club uses a member's Terpoints when assigning parking and tickets for home, away, and postseason events.

Victory Circle

What is the Victory Circle?

The Victory Circle represents the major gift efforts of the Terrapin Club. The Victory Circle consists of over 100 members who actively support the student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence with a gift above and beyond their annual fund donation. Victory Circle members support facility construction and renovation, create endowments that support scholarships and programs in perpetuity, further improve opportunities to succeed through program enhancements, and leave a lasting legacy through planned gifts.

Membership for an outright or pledged gift in the Victory Circle begins when a gift is made and lasts for five years, which coincides with the average length of a pledged gift. Membership for a planned gift lasts for the life of the donor.

Click here for more information on the Victory Circle.

How is the Victory Circle different from the Annual Fund?

Gifts to the Victory Circle are philanthropic and are used to support numerous priorities and projects. These may include scholarship and coaching endowments, operational support, facilities and capital projects. The Annual Fund is solely used to support the annual and ever-growing scholarship bill. Victory Circle gifts are typically above and beyond your annual gift and do not count towards your annual seating or parking requirements.

What are the benefits of joining the Victory Circle?

A Victory Circle gift supports the mission of Maryland Athletics and propels the department forward. Additionally, Victory Circle members may receive invitations to events with coaches and staff, exclusive experiences, facility naming opportunities, travel with certain teams, and more depending on the gift.  Additionally, Victory Circle members receive Terpoints for their gift.

How do I join the Victory Circle?

To join the Victory Circle, contact a Terrapin Club development officer at 301.314.7020 or tclub@umd.edu.
