Strength and Conditioning Department Vision Statement
To provide our student-athletes with the best hands-on strength and conditioning program in the country that maximizes their physical potential and self-confidence through a well-designed, collaborative training program based on sound physiological principles.
Philosophy
Our philosophy at the University of Maryland is to enhance athletic performance and minimize risk of injury by using evidence-based research and sound training principles. This philosophy is designed to foster a holistic approach to athletic development that is based on teaching our values of excellence, discipline, integrity, accountability, and leadership.
1) Minimize Risk for Injury
At the foundation of our philosophy is our priority to minimize risk for injury. We accomplish this through proper warm up protocols, injury prevention techniques, and load monitoring to ensure that our athletes stay healthy and can handle the athletic demands of their sport.
2) Sport-Specific Movements/Exercises
Our program emphasizes the development of speed, strength, agility, and conditioning in manners that are specific to the demands of each sport. In doing so, we ensure that our athletes are not only stronger and faster but are more effective in their athletic performance.
3) Foster Leadership Skills and Team Building Experiences
Leadership is not just about taking ownership, but listening, communicating effectively, and encouraging the growth of others. Therefore, we provide our athletes with opportunities to lead and support their peers both inside and outside of the weight room through team-building exercises. These shared experiences strengthen trust, promote teamwork, and help build a cohesive, successful team.
4) Accountability, Discipline and Effort
We believe that success is driven by consistent hard work and a strong sense of responsibility. We emphasize that effort is essential; it is a requirement to follow a structured training program, maintain proper nutrition, and commit to effective recovery strategies to support overall health and performance in both competition and academic pursuits.
5) Competitive Excellence and Integrity
At the pinnacle of our training philosophy is our commitment to competitive excellence and unwavering integrity. Our primary goal is to prepare our student-athletes to perform at the highest level in their sport, academics, and life.
