College Park, Md.-Senior back Jen Pratt (Greene, N.Y.), sophomore
midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Keli
Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches
Association (NFHCA) All-America teams. Pratt and Tagliente earned first-team
honors, while Smith made the second team.
Pratt earns All-America honors for the third consecutive year. She was
named to the second team last season and the third team in 1996. Pratt
becomes just the fifth player in school history to be named All-America
three times during her career. She finished her career as the ACC's all-time
assist leader, with 71. Pratt also holds the Maryland records for assists
in a season (33, set in 1997) and career. She has also been named to the
Mid Atlantic Regional All-America team four consecutive years and has made
the All-ACC team the past two seasons. Pratt capped off her career two
weeks ago by leading the Terps to their second-ever ACC championship and
earning ACC Tournament MVP honors.
Tagliente earns All-America honors for the second straight year. She
was named to the third team last season. Tagliente led the Terps this season
with 17 goals and 41 points. After two seasons, she is already seventh
on Maryland's all-time scoring chart with 36 career goals and 11th with
84 total points. Tagliente has been named to the Mid Atlantic Region All-America
team the past two seasons and was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1997.
Last year, she was also named to the ACC Honor Roll. On the international
level, Tagliente was a member of the 1997 U.S. National Team, an alternate
to the 1998 U.S. World Cup Team and a member of the 1998 U.S. Under-23
team.
Smith earns All-America honors for the first time in her career. She
was second on the Terps with 10 goals this season. Smith was named to the
All-ACC team this season and has been on the Mid Atlantic Region All-America
team the past two years. On the international level, Smith was an alternate
to the 1998 World Cup Team and a member of the 1998 U.S. Under-23 team.
The NFHCA releases their All-America teams each season at the conclusion
of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland finished the 1998 season 16-6, won the
ACC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
