TEMPE, Ariz. - University of Maryland designated hitter Cortney Madea drilled a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Terrapins to a 9-4 victory against Georgia on the final day of play at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Bettker collected her third win of the season after allowing four runs on 10 hits against the Bulldogs. The Dogs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second before Maryland answered in the fourth when Madea doubled to send sophomore Jen Potzman home. After Madea's two-run homer in the fifth, the Terps would close the game with five hits in the seventh inning, including a two-run homer by senior Kelly Shipman.
Shipman improved her season record to 4-2 on the season in the Terrapins' defeat against Utah on Sunday morning. The Maryland native allowed only one run off six hits against the Utes, and propelled the Terrapins to a 5-1 win.
The Terps started early as they would score one run in the bottom of the first when Madea recorded an RBI single which scored senior Amy Sandler. The Maryland defense combined with Shipman's pitching completely shut down the Utah offense, allowing the Utes' lone run in the third inning.
Maryland would finish strong as it posted four hits in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI home run from Madea.
The Terps enter this weekend's North Carolina tournament with a 6-6 record.
