TUCSON, Ariz. - Maryland's short game gave it the only run it needed in a close-played game against Kansas in NCAA Region 2 action here Friday as the Terps beat the Jayhawks, 1-0.

Sarah Putnam led off the Maryland sixth with a single. Pinch runner Holly Baldwin was sacrificied to second by Amy Sandler, then scored on winning pitcher Kelly Shipman's single to left-center.

Kansas moved a runner into scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh on singles by Amy Hulse and Shelly Musser, but Shipman got Courtney Wright to pop up to end the game.

Maryland meets Arizona at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the winner's bracket. Kansas plays Southeast Missouri State at 5 p.m., with the winner of that contest playing the loser of the UA-Maryland game at 7:30.
