COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland football team continued fall practice today as it worked in full pads for the second session in preparation for its September 1st opener versus North Carolina. Today's 3:30 p.m. workout was its only one of the day and included a nice turnout from Terrapin supporters. Below are notes from the team's sixth day of fall practice, August 16, 2001:
Terps Back on Grass
After spending almost all of their previous five days of fall practice on artificial turf, the Terrapins were able to move back to their regular, grass practice fields today. The move to the artificial turf was necessitated by poor weather in the College Park area and a muddy field which made for both a poor practicing surface and served to harm the fields for future use if they were played on. With the team's return to the grass fields today, the field is both dry and in good condition for use.
Fan Day Information
Maryland Football Fan Day will take place on Saturday, August 25th at the football practice fields. The day will include a 3:30 p.m. practice, a 5:00 p.m. scrimmage and an autograph session for fans at approximately 5:45 p.m. (Fan Day is the lone practice session of the fall where fans are not required to call in advance.) Check back in to umterps.com for more on Fan Day in coming days.
From Coach Friedgen
on today's practice and the progress of his kickers
"I think we continued to make progress today as a team.
"As for the kickers, (Nick) Novak made a couple of good kicks and has been performing well. I am going to keep putting pressure on he and (Vedad) Siljkovic and we will see who can step up and secure the job."
on some players who are surprising him and playing above expectations
"(WR) Mo Shanks has been making plays. Guilian (Gary) also had one of his better practices today. As I have said before, I have been real pleased with the play of our two tight ends (Matt Murphy and Jeff Dugan).
"On the defensive line, Charles Hill and Durrand Roundtree have done a nice job for us."
on the performance of the running backs
"Our most consistent performer so far has been Marc Riley. Jason Crawford has shown improvement and has a lot of potential but he has to work on holding on to the football.
