Field Hockey to Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary of 1993 National Championship on Oct. 18

Oct. 14, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey team returns to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex for two non-conference tilts on Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19. The Terps will also celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the program's 1993 National Championship. Former members of the squad will be recognized at halftime.

The Terps (12-2, 2-2 ACC) host two teams ranked in the top 15 of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coaches Poll. No. 7 Old Dominion (10-4, 6-0 CAA) travels to College Park for the second game of the home-and-home series on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. Maryland claimed the first matchup in the two-game series, 2-1, on Sept. 6 at Foreman Field. It was the Terps' second all-time regular season win in Norfolk, Va.

In what is traditionally one of the biggest games of the season, Maryland has squared off with Old Dominion the most of any non-conference opponent and the third-most of any team behind North Carolina and Virginia. The Lady Monarchs lead the series, 20-11-1, but 25 of the meetings have been decided by two goals or less.

Maryland closes out the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. hosting Delaware (10-4, 2-2 CAA). The Blue Hens are ranked 15th in the nation and are coming off of a 6-5 overtime loss at Old Dominion on Oct. 12. The Terps lead that series, 15-10-2. UD boasts one of the best offenses in the nation, recording 2.86 goals per game which ranks 19th in the country.

After suffering a disappointing 3-1 setback at then-No. 4 Duke on Oct. 11, the Terps are looking to get back on track and close out the season on a high note. Maryland has been tough to beat at home, owning an 8-1 record this season at the new, state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of Maryland's national championship run. Former Terps from the 1993 team, including All-Americans Lori Vile, Tricia Burdt, Irene Horvat, Sabrina Salam and Katie Kauffman, will be recognized during halftime of the Old Dominion match. UM captured the 1993 crown after a dramatic 2-1 triumph over North Carolina which was decided by penalty strokes. The championship was the first under head coach Missy Meharg and the team's second. Maryland went on to win the 1999 championship as well. The 1993 team ended the season with a 21-3 record and was 6-0 in the ACC.

Admissions to all Maryland field hockey games are free of charge. Parking is also free. For more information, visit www.umterps.com.
