Jackie Ciconte Named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week

Oct. 27, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland field hockey sophomore Jackie Ciconte was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, which was announced today by the league office. The third-ranked Terps host cross-town rival American for Maryland's final regular-season home match on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.

Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) earns the weekly conference honor for the first time in her career. She collected three points in the Terps' crucial 3-2 overtime triumph at No. 4 North Carolina last Saturday. The win moved Maryland into a tie for second place in the conference standings. Ciconte assisted on the game's first goal in the 19th minute. Early in the second half, she broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Terrapins a 2-1 lead scoring her first tally of the afternoon and her 16th of the year.

The Terps look to close out a successful home slate hosting the Eagles. Maryland is 10-1 this season at the brand new, state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Heading into the contest with a 15-2 mark and holding onto a three-game win streak, the Terrapins have never lost to American in 24 meetings. The Eagles entered the national weekly polls for the first time two weeks ago and are ranked 19th by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. They also boast a 13-2 overall record and are undefeated in the Patriot League at 5-0 after defeating Colgate this past weekend, 4-0.

Also on Tuesday, Maryland will be celebrating Senior Day. The lone senior on the squad, Lauren Pruitt, a local product out of Ashton, Md., will be recognized for Senior Day. A walk-on, she joined the team in the spring.
