Field Hockey Defeats Calgary in Exhibition Match

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After a slow start, the Terrapin field hockey team scored three of five second-half goals in a five-minute span to swell a 1-0 lead, en route to a 6-0 rout of the University of Calgary in an exhibition match on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland senior Anja Boettcher tallied two goals in the period while All-American junior Jackie Ciconte also scored twice in the game to lead the Terps. Maryland had total command of the game, peppering Dinos goalkeeper Burgundy Biletski with 31 shots, 19 coming in the second half. The Terps also out-cornered Calgary, 8-2. Biletski had 12 saves in the game. Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) notched the game's first goal in the 24th minute on the assist from sophomore All-American Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile). The pass was deflected over the keeper's head and into the left corner for the 1-0 lead. Infante ended the game with two assists to go along with a goal. In would not be until the second half that the Terps would score again. With Infante's goal in the 50th minute, the floodgates opened for two more tallies in the 52nd and 55th minute, as Maryland took a quick 4-0 lead. Ciconte punched the ball into the back of the net to put the Terps ahead, 3-0, and Boettcher (Ingolstatd, Germany) followed minutes later with an unassisted goal, 4-0. Junior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) scored on a penalty corner to put the team ahead, 5-0, in the 61st minute. Boettcher scored the team's final goal of the afternoon and her second of the game in the 69th minute. Maryland, who reached the 2004 NCAA semifinals and went 20-4 last season, travels to New England to officially open the 2004 season. The Terps face future ACC opponent Boston College on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. Boston University battles the Terps on Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. and then Maryland closes out the weekend with a scrimmage against Harvard on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. All three games will be played on the Crimson's home field.
