Terp Spirit Extends Overseas

Oct. 31, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With help from the University of Maryland athletics department, troops deployed overseas have been able to show off their Terrapin pride. The marketing office has fielded several electronic requests for Terp gear, such as the 63rd Signal Battalion (pictured).

The marketing office has also responded to soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Most of the requests come from alumni and self-described hardcore Terrapin fans. The athletics department was able to contribute hats and t-shirts.

The request from the 63rd Signal Battalion was made by Captain Stan Choate. In Choate's correspondance with the marketing office, he commented, "Thank you so much. My guys loved the stuff."

The 63d Signal Battalion deploys worldwide by air, sea or land to install, operate and maintain command, control, communications and computer (C4) systems in support of joint and combined operations across the entire spectrum of conflict. On February 16, 2003 the 63rd deployed to CENTCOM AOR in support of an upcoming war with Iraq. The actual date of deployment took place signifantly earlier than previously planned.
