The University of Maryland athletics department, Terrapin Sports Marketing, a subsidiary of Viacom Sports, and LIVE 105.7 FM (WHFS) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM (WJFK-AM) announced today a multi-year agreement in which the stations will become the new flagship radio partners for the Terrapin Sports Network beginning July 1, 2005.

Maryland athletics, including all football, basketball and lacrosse events, will be broadcast in Baltimore exclusively on LIVE 105.7 FM (WHFS) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM (WJFK-AM). As the flagship partners, the stations will produce and distribute game broadcasts, coaches shows and other Maryland programming to the entire Terrapin Sports Network (see complete list of network stations, below).

"Maryland Athletics is pleased to have expanded coverage of Terrapin sports," said Deborah A. Yow, Director of Athletics. "Our fans will enjoy the enhanced marketing initiatives and promotional opportunities provided by Infinity. This will be a dynamic partnership."

Robert Philips, Senior Vice-President and Market Manager of Infinity Radio/Baltimore, said, "We are delighted that we have reached this agreement with the University of Maryland. Baltimore-area listeners and sports fans can anticipate exciting seasons of sports broadcasts, including more airtime, better quality audio than ever before, on-site promotions and remote broadcasts."

The first event to include the new radio broadcast partners will be the upcoming Red-White Spring Football game to be held Saturday, April 30 at Byrd Stadium. The broadcast is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on LIVE 105.7 FM (WHFS) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM (WJFK-AM) in Baltimore and will also be heard in Washington, D.C., on network affiliate WMAL-AM 630.

"This partnership will provide Terps fans throughout the network listening area with improved programming and unprecedented coverage of Maryland athletics," said Christopher Janush, General Manager of Terrapin Sports Marketing.

Johnny Holliday, now in his 26th year as the "Voice of the Maryland Terrapins," will continue as on-air talent for game broadcasts. "I am very excited to be associated with the Infinity family," said Holliday. "This partnership will significantly enhance Terps coverage and take our game broadcasts to the next level."

Highlights of the new agreement include:

  • Maryland men's basketball and football pregame and postgame shows will be enhanced and expanded in length.
  • Home football game days will see the addition of live remote broadcasts from Byrd Stadium and the parking lots leading up to the pregame coverage.
  • An increase in the number of Maryland women's basketball games on ESPN Radio 1300, including expanded pregame and postgame shows.
  • The broadcast of all Maryland men's lacrosse home games on ESPN Radio 1300, a first in the history of the program.
  • The launch of "Terps Talk," a weekly, two-hour show dedicated to Maryland Athletics and hosted by Johnny Holliday. The show will air every Monday evening from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. from September through April on ESPN Radio 1300.
  • The one-hour Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen Radio Shows hosted by Johnny Holliday will air on both LIVE 105.7 FM (WHFS) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM in the Baltimore area.
  • A weekly "Terrapin Minute" will be produced, highlighting special information about Maryland student-athletes, coaches and events related to academic achievement and community service.
  • Marketing exposure for Terrapin athletics will be significantly enhanced through promotion across Infinity's five-station cluster in Baltimore - LIVE 105.7 (WHFS), ESPN Radio 1300 AM, WWMX-FM 106.5 (MIX 106.5), WQSR-FM (102.7 FM) and WLIF-FM (101.9 LITE FM). These stations combine to reach a substantial portion of the regional audience and a broad demographic of listeners.
  • The new agreement alleviates a long-standing issue with pre-emption of Maryland football in the Baltimore market.
  • The four-year agreement runs through the 2008-09 academic year and includes an option for an additional four-year term that would run through 2012-13.
